it's covered with a fiberglass roof but i know i need to secure that chain link fence (first time owning chickens!) and husband thinks 2" chicken wire is fine and i said NO, coons can reach through from what i've read.

What's the least expensive material i should be buying to secure over my chain link fence run?

Is it necessary to buy hardware cloth if it's going over chain link fencing? Can i just buy 1" chicken wire, i really need to keep the cost down.

Thanks for any and all help!!

Also, should i keep the food in the run or in the chicken coop? (the chickens will free range during the day)

expensiveness payed now will buy you piece of mind later on. Hardware cloth is about 99.9* percent raccoon proof. * somebody somewhere has got to have a story about how some big monster coon the size of a small bear tore thru hardware, but I haven't quite read that story yet. Just taking about some two foot width stuff along the bottom of that chain link will decrease your worries about a raccoon reaching in and getting your girls. I would also suggest a good roost bar that the girls physically can't sit close enough to the fence for a raccoon to reach in and snatch one.

Thanks, you're right. I'll spring for the hardware cloth and put it at least 2 feet up.
