I have two girls, my bantam Brahma Zena and my RIR Winnie. Winnie has started to cackle at 5 am because she wants out of her hen house and run. We shut our girls in their roost at night to keep them more protected from the many predators we have in the area but she is not happy about the situation. My husband is not too happy about the noise. We have neighbors and we don’t want to upset them. We are allowed to have chickens but we don’t want to be bad neighbors.

I am putting up black out cloth in front of their window hoping that it helps with how early she begins to cackle. But any information on how to sound proof heir hen house would be appreciated.

Hi There.
We have a 2 storey coop, and run, my husnand built. The front of the coops,
are the doors, made with double hardcloth mesh. We have 12 hens, every night they
trot up their ladders to bed, on their own. lol Bar for 2 who waits for me and my son,
once they see us, they are happy and off they go. lol Like you we also did not want to
upset our neighbours. Especially in the morning. So i bought, a huge, garden strong
weed killer mat. Which we double and it fits across the front, of both, also hangs to floor.
As soon as we put the cover on, all our girls, are fasto. lol Every night we laugh at them,
as before the cover goes on, they are bickering with each other to roost. lol But once
the cover goes on, it is dead silence, crazy how fast they all go straight to sleep. Then in the morning, the cloth keeps it dark. Only time you will hear them wake is when we take cover off. Of course then, they are pushing and shoving, who gets out first. Wahhh
The cover is really strong and hardwearing, material. I already bought it ready for my garden, and had not used it. Then this one night the weather was bad, and thought
i would try it. As it was still new, in packet. Although i live in UK it only cost me £5.00.
I like you, thought of sound proofing inside of coop, however we would then block up the vents. So because it is summer, here we use this cloth. Not a night goes by, when we have a giggle when the cloth goes on, as they are like naughty kids, and then all of a sudden, silence. lol. Hope this helps.:jumpy

Thank you she is the trouble maker, but a very sweet chicken. She allows my 2 year old to pick her up and hold her. He loves his chickens and enjoys helping me take care of them. I’ll try covering them. I might have to secure it somehow because we constantly have a strong breeze in the afternoon and evenings.

Hi Again.
What we done was knock a few nails/screws along the top. Then we just clip it on, and then on the bottom, we use their ladders, to lean against it, we also have wind ect. The material is strong and when doubled up, works well.:jumpy

Do you think cork tiles are safe to use inside the chicken coop?

No..... they will likely peck them apart and eat them.

Chickens are loud, even the females.
It's pretty hard to insulate for sound and still have good ventilation.
Coop is pretty small for even just 2 chickens...might be why she's 'unhappy'.

How old is she....has she started laying yet??
Has she always made 'too' much noise?

Hey, the coop is small but my girls only use it at night or if we have major construction going on. They are free range all day and only go in their coop and roost to lay eggs or go to bed. The majority of the time they are on the hillside combing through our grass or lounging in the shade on our back patio. At least someone gets to use it. As for the noise I only care about cackling early in the morning(500-630) I’m trying to darken the roost so that she sleeps a little longer or provide some sound buffer so she doesn’t wake our neighbors or us on the weekends.

Can they get out into the run part of the coop/run combo whenever they want?
Where is the feed/water?
