Need to Tube Severely Molting Hen

Pics
Now Ester is having a dust bath in peace, and I have an oscillating heater blowing into her little corner so she can enjoy without shivering and wasting all her energy on trying to stay warm. She started walking weird while foraging, I think from the cold?
Awwww. Maybe just feeling weak. :(
I am glad she got a bath.

Well, I thought she might be clicking just slightly when she was breathing and the tip of her comb looks like it might be turning slightly bluish, so I brought her in. She went straight for the heat lamp. Oh goodness. I hope I haven’t aspirated her at any point. I would think I would’ve known the moment it happened.

I was a wildlife rehabilitater for over 20 years and I’ve tubbed many animals and this post has been outstanding! Well done!! I may have missed something but normally you don’t feed an animal until it’s completely hydrated but like I said I may have missed something. I’m so glad everyone saved this baby. 👍👍

Thanks so much for your feedback! *I think* she was properly hydrated (with water and generic, clear pedialyte) before I introduced formula. Perhaps she could have used one more syringe of fluid before the first feeding?

If you give 14 ml per pound, repeat in 60-90 minutes, then one more time in 2-4 hours, and they are pooping semi-normal poop, it's usually okay to start food. The most important though, are the first two. I cannot stress enough how one really needs to do this.

Oh goodness. Ester decided to come out now that there is no sun on the yard. She’s having a dust bath, which is good. Ruby wants a piece of her and it seems Roxy (whom Ruby is afraid of) is standing guard.

It's great to see her dust bathing and grazing again. Even if she'll have to be an indoor chicken for a bit longer, at least she is seeing the rest of her flock and getting to stretch her legs.

She is lucky to have you Michelle. 🤗

Ok. Then perhaps she hadn’t received quite enough fluids on the first day? That was a week ago. She seems ok now? One day her comb looked more flopped and she got more fluid. I am happy to tube her fluids anytime. Did you see her super wet poop in the recent video? She also has normal poops.
