Need URGENT help One rooster dead and another one is sick

I don't think the medication would affect the eggs unless he fertilizes them. I'd just keep him seperate. Every medication should have a withdrawl period listed on the label.
I wish I could help with a diagnosis, but I've only had chickens for about 5 weeks now. Is he on medicated feed? Did you look up the symptoms of some of the common illnesses? Coccidosis, Maerks (sp?), etc? I would say the lethargy could be a secondary symptom of the stool. Just because you didn't see any loose stool before you noticed he was lethargic, doesn't mean there wasn't any. Does that make sense? I would think loose stool could cause dehydration which could cause lethargy.

From everything I am reading, it sounds like he might have cocodois. I was thinking of treating the entire flock. I do have him separated. I looked at a couple of the other chickens this morning and a couple look like they have loose stool base on what I see on their feathers. They are eating and drinking ok thus far. I hate wasting all those eggs, but dont want to lose my flock or make my family sick either.

Any and all ideas appreciated at this point.

I'm sorry I didn't see this yesterday. You can put your roo on a heating pad set on LOW with a towel over it and try giving him Pedialyte to get some electrolytes in him. See if he'll eat any scrambled eggs or any of his other favorite treats.

Can you get any help from your local extension center? I was just looking at a booklet I got the other night in a poultry workshop at one near me. There's a chart of diseases with basic symptoms. Diarrhea is a common symptom with many of them; though some elablorate more with the nature of it. For cocci, it says "bloody droppings, ruffled feathers, huddling, decreased appetite, pale combs."

The only one I see listed that specifically mentions green diarrhea is Exotic Newcastle Disease (END), which is a pretty serious one (must be reported to health authorities in many states). I've only been raising chickens for a year, this is the only fowl disease I had heard of before because it affects parrots too. I don't think it's very common, but there are occasional outbreaks in regions. Outbreak is from direct contact between birds or their bodily discharge, or contaminated clothes or equipment. I don't want to scare you; I don't think this is very common at all.

Another major symptom of a lot of the illnesses is some sort of respiratory distress-labored breathing, coughing, wheezing, etc. Also, look at his movements (tremors?paralysis), overall coloring, vent, clearness of eyes, skin...Is he puffed up?

I'm no scientist and I'm still pretty new with chickens, but I wanted to offer you something to hang your hat. I imagaine that treating for cocci or giving medicated feed certainly won't hurt, so long as you don't eat the eggs, per instructions.

Unfortunately I don't have any phone numbers or websites, but University of Maryland has decent poultry team/information and a bit of surfing might yield some contacts. Unfortunately, I have to head out soon for an appointment and can't help on that end.

Good lucks

Hey i know this sounds weird but you dont want to eat the eggs right? that doesnt mean the chickens don't if they already got that junck in them(Junck = Meds.) Why not let them eat them raw? simple just poke a hole i them they eat like crazy. Its packes wth protein to help healing treats your chickies to a nice snack its a win, win, win situation.

See though, from what all I've read, with chicken poo, "normal" has a wide range of appearances... Did he possibly get grass or some other green vegetable meal beforehand?

I think i have read that green poo can also be caused from not eating check into that before jumping to any other ideas. Sorry I cant be of anymore help but I would give antibotics . I wouldnt allow them to eat from the egg because that will make egg eaters . If you treat them with meds you could cook up the eggs and feed them back this way they are not going to waste. DO NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO EAT THEM IF THEY ARE GETTING MEDS. I am sorry I dont have any other ideas of what could be the issue , I would look and see if they possibly got into something check the feed make sure it isnt moldy. Check for mold in the coop too. Good luck and best wishes to you and ur peeps.

Yes! I forgot about that! Bile from the gall bladder is green. It's secreted to adjust the pH of the "food" as it moves through the intestinal tract. If he's not eating, it could be just bile in his poo. I'm sure there is an underlying issue though. I would try a broad spectrum antibiotic and see how that does.

Had he and the other roo been free ranging? They may have eaten something that was poisonous to them. In which case I recommend keeping the water and food going, especially the water. What do you normally feed, and chance it was moldy? Any extra treats lately?

I doubt it is coccidiosis, it usually gets the chicks only. That's why feed is only medicated for chicks. Since this is a one year old roo, I suspect he's eaten something weird or some disease has suddenly invaded your flock.

Have you brought in any new birds lately? Visited anyone with chickens or been visited by other chicken people?

Bad idea. "Junk" = meds. = uncontrolled double dosage of meds. And eating raw eggs frequently = egg eaters. Even if the eggs are cooked, do not feed them to anyone - put them in the trash.

He seems better today. He is up and moving around. Not wanting me to handle him. yesterday he did not fight me at all. His poo is a creamy off white in color. Minimal green. The green does remind me of bile. His comb is bright red. They have been free ranging. My chickens have free ranged before and have not had any problems, but who knows. I think I am going to hold off another day before I give any meds. Everyone else seems to be fine at this time. I have not changed their food. They are eating egg layer. The same thing they have been eating since they came off chick feed. I have always had very healty chickens without problems. Of course I have had them up and die for no apparent reason, but not sick like this. just very odd. Thank you for the help.

What is the dosing for Corid. I see the dosing for cattle on the bottle, but nothing about chickens.
