A single grain does not have enough nutrition for chickens. You cannot feed them on just grains and you definitely cannot feed them on one grain. What are they getting for protein? Fat? Not to mention it's not at all balanced in vitamins and minerals. They won't lay well and they probably won't live long. They either need a proper poultry feed from the feed store/mill or you need to look up a real home made feed recipe. It's usually cheaper and definitely will be easier to use feed from the store than make your own for just a few hens.

They also need food available 24/7. Not meals. Get a feeder that will hold at least enough until you get out to feed them again. Preferably a little extra in case your late.

If you mean a bag of poultry feed (layer preferably) then so long as the feeder keeps the feed from getting wet and spoiling or eaten by rodents you can dump the whole bag in there. If you mean a bag of grain then no it would not be a good idea because you don't want them to just eat grain. You want them to eat poultry feed. Grain should be a treat or supplement. Something they eat in smaller amounts than their poultry feed.

Aloha Wolfbird,

Okay here is my info for you.....

1st, get the layer crumble. 16% is fine, they need that to aid them in egg production.

2nd, The feeder you have is awsome!! However, you don't want your birds to waste food on the ground. I do not know if you have heavy, light or miniature/banty types but feed accordingly to the size of the bird. Times that by seven. It is per bird, that is why.

3rd if you let your birds free range it helps on the cost of feed. Plus you can get all those nasty bugs out of the way too. But that is if they are habituated to you, tame.

4th, Make sure they have access to water at all times.

That should do it... every day feed and water till you see eggs... Good luck..

I'd like to add that not just feed and water everyday until you see eggs, fresh feed, fresh water every day For the entire life of the animal!

If you dump a whole bag of feed out, it may well spoil before the birds get to it. I think I feed between 1 and 2 pounds fresh food each day for 9 full size chickens. They also free range on 1/4 acre. They don't eat the same amount each day so it varies every day but; when you decide to take in any animal, for any reason, that animal requires fresh food and water daily for the entire time you own it.

Just as YOU like fresh food and don't drink slimy water, same goes for your animals. Also water freezes overnight and they need water replaced when it is ice. In summer, water gets slimy quick. Owners must keep an eye on this stuff and the cleanliness of the animals quarters as well as proper areas to roost off the floor and proper nest boxes built up off the floor.
