Need your ideas on conserving Endangered Breeds...

how long have you owned chickens??? before you get into a rare breed i think it is best to get the basics out of the way... so if it was me i would go to McMurry or another big hatchery and order a rare breed assortment... now the ones from the hatchery's are not the best ones to start with but you can see how you like a few different breeds and get allot of good experience raising chickens... then after a year or so figure out what breed you want and find the best place to buy them from and spend the money to get really good stock... find a person that has raised that breed for years and develop a relationship with them so they can mentor you... be aware that it might take you a year or more to get good birds... after u have had that breed for at least a year or more then decide if you want to add another rare breed to your farm... go slow, start small, and prepare before you get anything...
I started last year with the chickens.
What I like most about the breed is they love to free range and they're good layers without the broody. I've read about the breed pros and cons and I've got you guys here on this fantastic forum to talk with & learn from, so while I know it looks like I'm jumping in quick I'm really not, I've bred and raised my own horses and dogs for many years.

I grew up at the beach but still found a way to spend every weekend at the horse stables mucking, grooming and being a trail guide to all the "city folk" LOL I guess what I mean is when it's something I'm passionate about there is nothing keeping me from doing it...and I've learned alot in the last year. So while I expect some difficulty, I figure it'll be good for me to learn.

Legbars aren't in the American Standard so the best they can do at a show is Best of Breed & usually your Legbars will be the only ones at the show-they're rarely seen.
Really? oh well, thats ok, this 4H stuff is totally new to me. thanks for the info. Now if you want to talk about horse shows well that I know, but I admit limited knowledge there. I never was a big show person, I guess growing up around snooty PV kids kinda turned me off. I'm big on the trail riding though, my 1/2 andalusian and I were volunteer sheriffs on a mounted posse. Now that was fun!!

But again thank you for the info and please any information on 4H would be great too!

I had Golden Campines. I LOVED them so much. They did fly everywhere, over our 10 foot high fence and they did panic when they were in the coop at the same time I was. So I got rid of them, but their personalities were so different from any other chicken we have had. They were talkative, brave, and cheerful. The poultry yard was like a funeral after they were gone. Now I wish I had just put a net over the pen. I have bought a heavy duty net for my Fayoumis that we just bought, as they are going to be the same way. I like wild and independent chickens.

I haven't finished reading through the thread, so apologies if this seems out of context.

Yeah, I would have anything in a covered run, as we have lots of overhead predators here.
i like Fayoumis too!! Seems Campines are fairly popular with those that keep them!

Great advice, Thank you!!
I have had my own chickens for just over a year. Our plan is to start with one rare breed and go from there, just as you suggested!! I don't need to get overwhelmed!!
We aren't going to start with the rare breeds till we get the coops built. I have decided to start with Bredas, and go from there. I really love the color of them, no blues yet in my flock, so I must get blue in there.....

I also love their vulture hocks!!!
