Today I adopted a set of 3 chickens said to be 6 months old (but seem a bit smaller) from a family who simply didn't have time for them, never got to building the coop, and didn't feed them the right food. It's apparent they've been in this plastic bin the garage their whole lives eating scratch grains with no roost bar.

The Speckled Sussex and Buff Orpington seem ok. Meanwhile the Rhode Island Red has some issues, mainly her feet seem to want to curl. As you can see in the photos she is able to stand momentarily, even using a wing to stabilize. I suspect nutritional deficit or lack of roost bar? I'm not entirely sure. The feed store they were from originally from does typically only carry chicks vaccinated for Marek's.

Thoughts on a diagnosis? What can I do to help her out?

Currently I am giving them water with electrolytes & probiotics. I have layer mash and crumbles available, but could get some grower mash if that would be better. They will be in a large dog crate in my garage with a roost bar until I feel like they area ready to integrate with my adult flock of 7.

They probably have a vitamin and mineral deficiency from not getting a balanced diet. I would give them each 1/2 tablet of human vitamin B complex orally or in a treat of scrambled egg or wet food daily. The tablets crush or dissolve. That can treat a riboflavin deficiency if started early enough. Riboflavin deficiency can cause curled under toes, walking on hocks, and can lead to curled toe paralysis. It is good of you to give them a better home.

This is very helpful. Thank you.

Just crushed and mixed with very little water and they all received it. I will try with some scrambled egg tomorrow as that will probably be easier.

Get them a starter. grower, or flock raiser.. in addition to the supplementation already being done. They're still more than 4 weeks out from laying and the other feed type will go farther towards proper growth and development which has been lacking in protein thus far.. according to your description.

Hope they recover quickly! :fl
