Neighbor dog killing my chickens!

One thing for sure if you are going to shoot it I would not even say word to the nieghbor. Just be done with it and never tell a soul. You do not want a neighbor looking to get back at you.

I would make the yapper disappear. If the neighbor never came to apologise the FIRST time(yelling over to you does not could) then it is darn unlikely they will care if you go over with dead hens in hand asking them to please keep the dog under control. People aren't dumb-they know what they are allowing.

Better to catch the dog and quicly crate it in the house for relocation or disposal. Never say a word to anyone, so you can hopefully avoid a neighbor war. I know it sounds decietful and I guess mean, but what is your other options? Plead with the neighbors? With your neighbor friend? Spend more of your limited money to better fence the yard?Might want to do that over time anyway.

I guess for me it just seems easier to get rid of the problem rather than beg and complain.Working up to SSS would be frustrating for me. Calling AC/Police,paintballing,and whatever..... I would get headaches and an ulcer. I would rather just get rid of the dog even though it is likely they will get another.Hopefully a disappearing dog would result in tie out or a kennel. I know I would do things different if my pet disappeared.

Best wishes whatever you decide to do!

Had this happen with my last flock. pegged the dog in the rear end with a bbgun every time it came in the yard...eventually she stopped coming over.

If the neighbor agrees to cough up $20 apiece for the pullets you might suggest their kids pay all or part from their allowance. It does wonders for their memory.

I would charge more than $20.00. I figure price of chick, feed to raise, meds if any and the cost of all the eggs it would have raised over two years at $2.00/dozen because that's what people charge for brown eggs range raised here.

If you have a live trap that is big enough, set it up and trap the dog. When he comes looking for his dog say " I have been having trouble with something killing my chickens, so I set out a trap to catch the bugger. Maybe I should check the trap."

In our area, you can call animal control and they can seize the dog until either a fine is paid or a verbal warning (depending on how many times), and they will do it in the name of unleashed dog, not dog eating chickens. In Maine you can shoot a dog if it is harassing your livestock. I would catch him, and bring him to the local shelter. THey'll have to pay a loose dog fee and learn to keep him/her tied up or fenced in without even involving you. If they are reasonable and you can talk with them start there. If not, quietly, catch him or scare him off, or call animal control. Keep a long loop leash around for next time. He may be a person biter too! In Maine people take this seriously so it would go to court and a dog can be ordered euthanized worst case scenario, or muzzled, or the court can rule they have to put up a fort to keep their dog in. Their cost, their responsibility.

Since I train dogs and am a vet tech first I would advise to talk to him or go animal control route. I hate seeing dogs with pellets in them, it sucks surgery wise. But if they're asshats and can't understand their dog is their responsibility, the shelter would be my next suggestion. I have three dogs and somehow they don't eat our chickens!! We keep our dogs under very tight reigns. If a loose dog came by my house, to harass my dogs or my chickens, they'd get scared away....scared enough to never come back...

If you call ACO or the shelter, ask to remain anonymous. Whos to say hes not harassing other neighbors in your area? Unfortunately in the dog mind this is a self rewarding behavior so training him to NOT eat chickens is very hard and very time consuming. Its better to manage it as an owner, just in case.

I recommend using a bb gun to shoot the dog in the fanny..please just make sure you shoot it in the fanny and don't take an eye out...Also make sure your neighbors can't hear the gun discharging. I wouldn't just get rid of the dog because the owner will probably just get another. I would be pretty upset if someone killed my dog because it had killed a chicken or just because my dog is hanging in a neighbors yard. Normally my dogs are always fenced in (my yard) and I am a good dog parent...watch them like I would watch my children (if I had any) but it sounds like your neighbor is a piece of work! Of course if my dog killed anything I would pay for the damages and would train the darn thing NOT to kill livestock!
Seriously try the bb gun, IT WILL WORK in the mean time bring your neighbor a bill:) It is better to remain friends, really really it is:)

another thing to do is to go over to your neighbors house, screaming hysterical that your pet chicken has just been killed and you looooved it so much and blah blah blah, cry and so forth...he would def feel like a jerk then!
