Neighbor Took My Chickens

Keep your birds contained.
Not sure if and how you can get the ones gone back, but make sure no others can wander onto other peoples property.

Does she want to keep them or......?
Does she already have chickens....in a coop and run?

I have the others cooped now. I didn't ask if she wanted to keep them but im sure she does. She's got mine in a coop but I saw another one with some bantams.

That's a toughy.
Are you an adult?
Did you tell her they are yours, apologize for letting them get into her yard, and you want them back?
Is there any animal control in your area?

Your parents should be handling this from now on.
Kind of think we all need to start asking the "adult/living with parents/child" question with every post; not age. As helpful as this community is, we are or could be giving a young adult a VERY ADULT response that could lead to some very ADULT reactions if the maturity level isn't there. As this seems to be happening a lot.

I know if an 19 year old vs a 50 year old attitude/wisdom/demeanor came at me with a couple of these responses given, my response would be much much different.

they have no reason to go that far unless they are being fed.

chickens wander to eat grass, bugs, etc. they obviously have been wandering for awhile bc chickens stay pretty close to coop at first, then venture farther as they get comfortable, so for them to go a couple houses away tells me that they’ve been doing this for days/weeks/months. In other words, they have consistently not been contained within your property. It is highly unlikely that she lured them there, and for them to get used to being fed by her means they’ve been able to get to her often enough to develop a habit/pattern Bc they were consistently not contained to their property. but, she maynever had fed them (or lured them with food), they may have just gone there to eat grass and bugs, or maybe she has better shade. :idunno

she is fine to ask for proof of ownership -after all these aren’t tagged or collared or chipped animals. But, she should give them back.

I’d like to point out that your chickens could have been killed by a dog if one of the neighbors had a dog out when they were free ranging in neighbors property. And if killed on another persons property, you wouldn’t have any recourse bc you didn’t contain your chickens to your yard.

hopefully you get them back.

My chickens free range, and sometimes they get out of our yard. One day I noticed that four or five of my younger ones didn't come back. A couple belionging from that group did return. I thought that was strange. We looked around a bit and spotted a cockerel that looked almost exactly like one I was missing. We talked to the owner of the house and she said yes, she had caught some chickens in her yard and she had them locked up because they were being "destructive". I asked what kind of damage was done and she said "They've been pooping everywhere so I locked them up." We described the chickens we were missing and she said thats what the ones she had looked like and she'd also seen a black and red cockerel "A pretty, unusual looking bird" coming over but she couldn't catch him which kind of gives me the hint that she would nab him too if given the chance. She said he'd been bringing over a white speckled hen, one that usually stays in our yard over. She didn't seem keen on giving them back and asked for pictures of them. We didn't have any at the moment :(

So it seems that she doesn't want to give them back, but they are my chickens and I really want them back. I have no idea why they'd even go over there unles they were being fed as this house is a ways from ours. So that gives me the suspicion that she was trying to lure them over there? I'm also missing a peachick that likes to wander around with said chickens and I wouldn't be surprised if she had him too. I dont want to jump to conclusions though. I do have some other chickens I'd be willing to trade in for the ones she has. When we were talking to her she wasn't being very reasonable but we're trying to figure out how to get them back. My chickens are all penned now to avoid losing any more. Thoughts and tips please?
Call the cops on her that seems like the only thing to do.
