neighbors cat chewed my birds head off!

I lost two last night to what I think was a cat also. The strange thing is that the carcasses were wedged between the coop foundation and the fencing and only the parts that went thru the wire mesh were chewed off. No sign of damage to the fence either. Beats me, but what a mess.

If you catch the cat either shoot it with brightly colored paintballs or maybe SSS. Something got one of my big girls awhile back and it looked like dog tracks. I burried her pretty deep and the critter came back the nest day and dug her up. I burried her 3 feet down. I work graveyard so I sleep during the day. I have seen some stray dogs on my property and if I see them near my birds it's SSS. I have put up an electric fence wire about 4 inches from my regular fence. There are pictures on my BYC Page.

I had some chicks I was introducing to my coop. I had them in a large dog crate that had very small square mesh. Probably not more than 1.5" in diameter if that.

A racoon got all of them. What they do is stick their hand in the cage and the chickens freak and start running around and the coon just keeps grabbing and pulling until he usually has killed all of them...then he will pull out as much as he can reach and leave the rest. Very gross for sure. I doubt a cat would do that.

I live in Israel and we have wild cats that roam all over the city. Before I had a run for my chickens I would have cats come in on the hunt every day and stalk the birds but they never attacked. In fact once my top hen chased one away.

To repel cats

#1 - Electric wire high and low
#2 - A good dog that HATES cats
#3 - A GUN. Powerful pellet gun, 22 rifle or SHOTGUN. 410 will do.

Remember, YOU are the guardian of your flock, not just a bystander. When you go to bed at night, you do so with the intentions of being SAFE! Your fowl should enjoy that same expectation. They depend on YOU to stay alive! ANY ANIMAL (two, legged, four legged or winged) that would deprive your fowl of life is your enemy! Unless you raise fowl for predator food. I do not!

at night they are safe..they are shut up in their coop which is solid wood..so we are ok on that front..my oldest has been sitting in the backyard waiting for it to come back, which it did yesterday and got shot in the butt with a bb gun! he still keeps coming though so hopefully we can catch the stupid thing.

I like cats for the most part and have a pet cat. However, there are also ferral cats on the prowl around me, as well as some who belong to people but roam...I would'nt hesitate to take out any chicken killing cat in my yard...

My Maine coon keeps his distance from the chickens, they peck at him when he hangs around, but he has brought in 7 squirrels to date, all with heads chewed off, and some down to their middle...yuk!

I forgot to mention, a BB gun and most all pellet guns won't stop a determined cat..You will need a 22 at the very least for a determined cat...IMO

Our barn cat E.T. sleeps in one of the nests the hens do not use. She just appeared here last year but, leaves adult chickens alone. I would not trust her with chicks/bantams. At times she even eats laying pellets with the chickens.

I wouldn't doubt it on a mean feral though. Sorry for the loss.

One of my pullets Peep HATES my cat Blue. Because he grabbed her tail feathers when she was drinking. Now whenever he purrs against the wire she rushes and trys to peck him in the eyes. One cat the I used to have killed a banty that I got the night before because she got out of my coop. That sounds more like a coon but if the cat was HUGE it could've got your Ameraucana. I'm sorry what happened to your chicken. Here's some hugs.
