Neighbors dog issue..

well if you think your neighbors dealing drugs do this

call the cops

tell them i think my neighbors are dealing drugs because there is a different car there like every 20 minutes and i dont feel safe so could you investigate?

let them investigate

I know you also posted about them stealing eggs, idiots! Well I suppose if it's kids, depending on the ages, they may just be hungry. People like that don't feed their kids.

I know this may not work for you but it did for me. I owned a small farm several years back, my closest neighbor was a huge dealer. Traffic 24/7, accidents from the "customers" leaving while high, just really awful! I told the guy to keep his s#it in his yard or I'd be sure to shut him down. We lived like that for almost 3 years. His issues did not enter my yard, I didn't call the cops. Lots of others did though

The ATF descended on them one night, shot the house up, and hauled them away. They found over a million $ in stolen goods. The guy died in jail

So it all works out in the end

On a side note about the little thieves, try giving them some food. Of course I mean if they're little kids, not dangerous, and if you have any to spare. I know we've fed the neighbors kids in a couple different places we lived. The parents may be worthless, but you can still make a difference in the life of a child.

We had a family just like that living across the street for over a year. It was one thing after another - very stressful - and even various neighbors calling the police didn't solve the problem right away. They'd get a warning, or a fine, or a visit from child protective services, but the bad behavior went on and on. They had pit bulls which got out of the yard on many occasions, they threatened my daughter and I, and one morning I woke up to ten of my daughter's young ducks dug out of their pen and dismembered around the yard...we're almost positive their dogs were the culprits.

Ultimately, one of them went to jail, and we found out the police had been monitoring the drug activity the whole time. It was to our great relief that they moved, and the neighborhood has been much quieter ever since. Time seems to take care of these kind of situations; the nature of the behavior pretty much dictates that. In the meantime, the deadbolt sounds like a great idea: those kids have no business messing with your chickens. A no trespassing sign would be a good idea, also, as I know in some states your property must be posted in order to make a complaint.

I live near San Francisco where I have friends who have gotten their neighbors together to sue the landlord who had tenants that sound very similar to your neighbors. This drug house was a few doors down from our friends house that was making the living conditions in this community unbearable.

Here is an excerpt from the website Nolo.com that mentions how community groups do this. I'm not sure of the laws in your state but you may just want to call this landlord and let him/her know that you or a group of you have contacted a lawyer to discuss options. This might be enough to cause action on the part of their landlord. I am also of the opinion that you need to be careful about singling yourself out. I lived in East Oakland for many years and making it known that you were the one who called the cops etc. that ruined the neighborhood drug trade or had them put in jail can lead to retaliation.

From nolo.com:
Tenants Band Together
Increasingly, tenants have gotten together to hold landlords accountable for failing to fulfill their legal responsibility to maintain rental property in a habitable condition. For example, tenants and homeowners have extended this group action approach to sue landlords for failing to protect tenants and neighbors from drug dealers, neighborhood gangs, or other tenants who are creating excessive noise, running an illegal business, or throwing trash in common areas. Similarly, homeowners have filed multiple suits to collect damages from neighbors who allow their teenage children to create disturbances that keep the neighborhood awake all night.

I also imagine if their "dog" were to disappear they would quickly go out and get another.

Good Luck!

I'd call animal control. Regardless of whether or not you have chickens, the dogs are trespassing on and damaging your property. You could also report suspicious activity since there are so many "friends" constantly coming/going and using your property as a parking lot/turnaround area.

Additionally, get a better air rifle. I've got a .177 air rifle that sends a dog yiping with only 3-4 pumps on it shooting a target slug. Of course, that doesn't do any good if you're not home, so on top of that I'd say it's time to look into an electric fence. We put one in for $150 precisely for the purpose of dealing with the vagrant dogs that are common in our area. As a bonus, it helps to handle just about any other varmint you may have around if configured properly.

As far as the suggestion to call the police, the OP may want to think about that twice. The first person those dealers are going to suspect of reporting them is their nearest neighbors. THere's no reason for her to risk her safety like that. She should just live-trap the dog in question, and take it to a pound several counties over. No danger, no risk, no conflict.

Edited to remove personal feelings about a person laughing over their dogs scaring people repeatedly.

you misunderstood - read again

and the dog DOES get into my fenced yard...sometimes thru a small opening (older fence..and tiny dog)...or the door is opened by my kids or sometimes even their kids...

and NOW yesterday we had to put a deadbolt on my coop due to this same family-- their kids getting in and taking the eggs...sooo..deadlock...ugh

I mentioned when the fence is open, thats when the dog comes in. This is the first time I have heard about the hole in fence. Even if it is your property the chickens are on, (and I never said it wasn't) - I still say you are leaving them unprotected without a fence, and some of this is within your ability to control. You could put a small fence or hotwire or something. If you leave the cookies out, don't be surprised when scummy people take advantage of that. As for the thievery, a deadbolt is a good idea, and a deterrant that I would use if my pen was freely accessable from other people's property. Putting some sort of fence around your chickens would be a deterrant to. Or put them inside your fenced yard. I live in a rural neighborhood with lots between 1/2 acre to 14 + acres. There must be at least 200 people who live on my street and adjoining properties. I would be insane to leave my birds outside of a fenced area, because sometimes dogs get out, there are cars, bad people that sometimes pass through, and thieves. If I were you I would also repair the hole in your fence. You have to protect yourself, your fence quality is within your control, you can't count on others to be responsible. I don't agree that dogs should be roaming, but when you live where there are a lot of other people, it happens occasionally. As a chicken keeper, i try to keep all those possibilities in mind when considering where and how to keep my birds. You can choose to consider my advice, or not. Its just that - my thoughts and advice on making this situation better for you and your chickens.

Seriously...do people read posts just looking to start a fight?

I love the idea about inviting the cops for free....cookies/hot dogs/lemonade/coffee/doughnuts/eggs, etc. Now, that was clever. I am curious to know if it would work. Would they come, or might they see it as a bribe? If it were me, I think I would ask them.

And let's all try to focus on the original post, ok?

I wish you the best of luck with your issue. My amazing neighbors are moving, and I am so concerned about what might move in after them. I feel for you!

Edited for typos

if your neighbors are presumed to be drug dealing, I would be concerned more about what could happen with people on your property. One day it's the chicken coop, who knows, next time it could be your house! If I had the money, i'd put wood panel fencing around my yard. at the very least strengthen up your fence, patch it, or run some hardware cloth around the base and buy a better latch (perhaps an auto-closing latch) for your gate. You can buy motion cameras for cheap. There are even motion light cameras with built in video recording. also, game cameras. I would light my yard like a christmas tree if anything got in.
