Neighbors dog just attacked (GRAPHIC PIC)

I am SO sorry! We are dealing with the same thing right now. Two of our hens got attacked on Saturday morning. I posted pictures (some were taken last night, so they have started healing) on my message/topic when I asked for help too!

Here is what we did (after freaking out and asking everyone for advice! Also, I am kinda picky and overcautious with this kind of stuff (and inexperienced), so this may be overkill, but our girls are doing fine considering the trauma):
Clean the wound(s) with diluted hydrogen peroxide or betadine (iodine). I've heard saline solution too as someone above me posted, but I had betadine, so we went with that. You'll want to clean it often (at least once or twice a day). Also, dogs mouths are DIRTY, so if it looks deep, use an irrigation syringe to clean it (probably use saline solution for this or antibiotic water). I agree with JJthink regarding neosporin too! I would recommend putting her on an antibiotic. We are using Aureomycin powder, which is added to water and that is all they have to drink, that way they get it into their systems. But, I am sure any broad-spectrum antibiotic would do. Injectable antibiotics seem pretty popular among BYC-ers too, but I am sure it is preference. Keep her inside if you can too, so the would can stay clean.

Good luck!!

Oh...regarding the hanging skin....uh, we didn't know what to do either and like you said, it can't exactly be stitched. But, she has her feathers (unlike mine...on was molting, the other had her feathers on her back pulled out). One person recommended "feather suturing". It sounds like a great idea, but I've never tried it. Apparently, you can super glue the feathers together on either side to keep the wound covered (or something along those lines). You might want to look that up and see if it will work in your case. In ours, we had to let the skin flap die (it was torn up too) and trim it off as the rest of the wounds heals around it.

I am sorry to hear about your hen. I hope that she recovers. I would still consult with your vet though just in case. I would also check with your local animal control office regarding loose and unrestrained dogs. Get a copy of the ordinance and take it with you when you visit your neighbor. Hopefully the dog is up on his shots as well.

In some rural areas, it is still permitted to shoot any animal that is attacking livestock, and the owner of the animal can be held liable for any damages to or death of livestock.

Sadly that is one of the dangers of allowing chickens free range is that of predation. If at all possible I would see if some kind of fencing can be put up to keep the dog away from your chickens. Your neighbor should be willing to split the cost of the fencing with you, especially if it serves as a property divider.

Good luck,

Fr. Chuck

I have her in a large dog kennel with soft bedding. She will have lots of food and fresh water. I am going to keep her in the barn tonight. I have an antibiotic flush that I got from the vet, when the first dog attacked one of my girls. I live in the country, and these dog owner's think that because we live in the country they can let their dogs roam. As soon as my son brought her in I was on the phone with the neighbor, I took my chicken over there, but the mother isn't home it was just the teenage daughter(yes, I was very calm). I also have pictures. Their dog has even growled and snapped at my husband when he was getting out of his car to come into our house. I told her to have her mother call me if she had any questions about what I explained to the daughter. This isn't the first time their dog has come over here. I have a fence up, but he get's through it. I will keep everyone posted on how she is doing.

Sorry about your baby. Had the same thing happen to mine as well the dog did kill 1 so as soon as we saw the dog again we held him down and beat him with the dead chichen until the bird fell apart. The neighbour was fine with it. Needless to say the dog wont even come on our property now and that is just fine with us. As for the bird with the missing feathers and a hole in her back she is diong fine I just left it alone and looked at it every day for a week It scabbed over nicely with no infections. She is doing well.
I wish you the best of luck. Dose anyone have any advice on how to get rid of a hawk?
