Neighbors Dog Killed Chickens

I will continue to protect what is mine, call it ignorant if you want, the law is on my side, I talk to them often!
Those that choose to own these bad dogs need to pay out the wazoo for letting them run free in the hood! This is how kids get mauled. Keep them home or loose them! 2 or more of these dogs make a pack, and then start killing things.
I myself have carried a gun since I was a small child, hunting in the woods alone, well with my dog. I know how to use it, clean it, and what and when not to shoot!
If you disagree with this we will just have to agree to disagree!
The OP needs to take action against the owner of said bad animal!

Im not sure if your just trying to get the last word in or you actually believe yourself? Most dogs are NOT prey driven thats why they are usually not trained well. In order to have a well trained dog its really helps that they are prey driven. Thats why you see "prey driven dogs" for cops(or other agencies) such as shepard breeds, terrier breeds, etc... there's been a lot of Articles lately about agencies that do not accept this or that dog because of the lack of prey drive!!! I think the most recent was about a yellow lab that was rejected from the CIA

Could have gave you a much bigger sample size considering ive had dogs for almost 30 years and everybody in my neighborhood has some sort of animal. but I was giving you the boxer and Pitbull example because people usually think those dogs definitely will eat the poultry!

Small dogs like Chihuahuas have no prey drive that's why there's some of the worst trained dog(along with other bad habits there dogs owners usually enstill)

However i agree 100% with u that a dogs can play with a smaller bird and kill it! My dog loves to roll on the grass and she does it prettty aggressively, she really throws herself into it. So obviously if there was a small bird next to her she would probably Crush while rolling over on it!

And I wouldn't suggest anybody to have chicks /ducklings around dogs unsupervised or even supervised with out some sort of barrier. But once their full size it's fine..

I'm guessing you're not a dog owner or a dog person because of your lack of trust... Its my confidence and Trust that I let my chickens and Ducks free range when my backyard lead to a smaller forest which backs up to a 1,100,000 acre forest lol (yeah over a million). I don't have any fences. Just 1 between my house and my neighbors to keep their horses out.

Not trying to have the last word here its just that there's a big misunderstanding about dogs. The "few bad apples" seem to be what everyone talks about. Everybody looks at dogs through human eyes. 99% dont even know how dogs became "mans best friend"
We can continue in a pm if you like. This is taking over the OPs post.

I 100% agree the owner is responsible and should pay. No question about that!!!

Just saying pulling out a gun and start shooting is the wrong train of thought..

Thats why we have the "police" so they can shot things for us...

Definitely get them to pay u $$. No question there!!

However You have the wrong mindset about the gun my friend. I get what you're saying but guns is definitely not to answer. Just watch the news....

To get revenge on a $3 chicken you lost, you might spend the rest of your life in jail? Short minded thinking!!!
Violence is the ultimate solution, it's also permanent many times. Sometimes it is the right solution .since the poster is likely not able to pu

Eh, not necessarily. The police are not going to be there when the shooting could do any good.

So if I read the original post right, it sounds as if you had forced entry into your coop/run area. Can you post pictures showing the whole setup and then a close up of the damaged section? This is all we know for sure, the rest is speculation. Let's work on fortifying your coop so that you don't have to worry about your birds when you aren't home or are sleeping. Whether it was a neighbor dog or something else, doesn't really change anything at this point. It is your responsibility to protect your birds. Even if it was the neighbor dog this time, it could be a fox or a raccoon next time.

If you repeatedly witness your neighbor dog in your yard or anywhere other than its home, treat this as a separate issue. Take photos that show the dog in your yard or in the road or wherever it likes to roam. (we have 2 dogs that roam our neighborhood regularly) You can call and report "dog at large" which is a ticketable offense many places and an ACO officer will likely catch, identify, and either return or impound the dog and may or may not issue a fine. I had ACO pick up my dog once years ago and I had to pay to spring him from doggy jail. It was a giant pain and we learned a lesson about better containing the escape artist. (he knew how to dig out from under his kennel fence and slip a collar and bolt through a door as you were struggling with groceries, it's not always about an irresponsible owner, though sometimes it is).

You cannot control the neighbor dog and wild predators, but you can work on your containment system for your chickens.

In regards to guns, the appropriate use, safety, and legality varies from place to place. What is acceptable and legal in town limits vs on ranch land are different scenarios. It's important to know your rights and know the laws to determine what course of action (and subsequent consequences) are in your best interest.

It cost me more at first, but I fenced my run with 1/2" hardware cloth all sides and top. No dog, raccoon, fox, coyote, deer, hawk, eagle or cat is going to get through it. We have all those around and all neighbors have their dogs. It won't stop a bear but if that comes to visit I got a bigger problem to deal with then.
I go with a presumption something will try to get my girls. It is less hassle and cheaper in the long run to build a deterrent and barrier of which I don't need to worry if it is enough. I have been looking at electric fencing, if I should add that to the mix but I don't want my older minpin getting shocked, he is half blind.
Our GSD excels driving away any coyotes and varmint including errant leaves that dare to fall too close to the yard, and another GSD puppy in training.
With any small livestock, you take a risk of predators. You can not protect them 100%. I know that when I let my girls roam around the yard out of the run, but I am also there paying attention and listening and making it safest for them the best I can.
Otherwise, you have to make your enclosure safest it can be, if you are not there present.

This depends on where one lives. If I were having dog problems like the OP and callasd the “police”, (where I live that would be the sheriff’s department) the conversation would be similar to the one below.

Guns are not the enemy, but I am not going to have that conversation. I do think it’s safe to say that most farmers and ranchers have and are proficient in the knowledge and use of firearms. They know when, where and how to use them, and many have owned and used them since they were kids. At least that’s how it is where I live.

In the OP’s case, I think fortifying the coop and run with electric fencing would be in their best interest since the neighbor has stated that the dog is a chicken killer. Should we the neighbor be accountable for keeping the dog home? Absolutely! But sometimes accidents happen and dogs get loose. Or dogs get dumped. Or one’s own dog has a bad day. Things happen.

LOL, last time I ask the sheriff to "come take care of it",
~
Sheriff "Mr Wise, dont you have a gun?"
Me "yes I do"
Sheriff "then go out and shoot it!"
CLICK
End of conversation.
