Neighbor's dog trying to dig under fence

Our daughter who lives in the city had a similar situation, the pit bull finally broke the fence boards and then broke into the coop and killed all 3 chickens. It turned out the neighbors' landlord didn't allow pit bulls, and he evicted them, fixed the fence, and now the new chickens have a secure pen. Definitely report to animal control. It is illegal to have a dog at large, and in most areas, illegal for dogs to kill livestock as well. Do what you can to protect the chickens before it's too late!

Chickens are legal so we are good there. I don't know much about the neighbors, but I did call animal control just to ask what the laws are around this. They said there is nothing they can do unless the dog actually has escaped, then that would be a different issue and to report it to their "field service". They recommended talking to the neighbors. We probably will, fingers crossed they are interested in putting in a solution to stop their dog from trying to dig! If not then we will install something on our side.

Exactly!

Capsaicin is the active ingredient in pepper spray, which is what they give to letter carriers as dog repellant. It's not particularly effective on breeds with a high pain tolerance though. I guess it depends on the dog.

Does he dig while you are standing on the other side? I'm wondering if a well-timed blast of pepper spray when he sticks his nose under would deter permanently,

That might be constructed as animal cruelty.......where as a little sprinkling of my favorite black pepper condiment much less so, but may be adequate deterrence.
