neighbor's dog

I have electric fence to keep my horses in. I don't know anything about watts or volts but I know if I touch the fence (which I do on occasion) it hurts!!!!! I doubt the dog will get shocked more than twice before he learns not to come near again. If you know where his path is where he comes under (or thru) the fence put a hot dog on the wire there. As long as the wire does not touch his skin he will not get shocked. Since it is winter and he is out all the time he most certainly has a winter coat which will protect him from the current. (Hair is an insulator-not a conductor) Again the wire must touch skin for him to get shocked. I once had a neighbors dogs kill some of my chickens. When I ran toward them one of them charged me growling. I immediately called the animal control and got the dog moved to another location. Hopefully I did not send my problem to another chicken person.

newchickmom,

The hot wires will be on plastic or ceramic insulator dognut and standoffs. Usually there is just one wire that's hot. It may not be clear, but the hot wire will be connected to the fence transformer/controller.

There's a bunch of the stuff you might want to check on electric fence. Google should be able to point you in the direction for some articles on these fences.
