neighbor's dog

don't shoot at the dog with a bb gun. that will either turn it mean or get you arrested for animal cruelty. if you are forced to shoot a dog, it must die. no wounding and letting it get off property. if you really want to discourage it without going to the neighbors try a can of pepper spray. that will keep you in the clear in case of litigation. if you spray him a couple of times he will probably not come back.

the cost to operate an electric fence is negligible. i like to keep the wires hot if you have them.

How much does a fencer cost to operate?
Fence controllers are very inexpensive to operate. Fence controllers only cost pennies per day. In fact, you will probably not notice a difference on your electric bill. Approximate costs per month to operate various fence controllers, based on $0.085 per kwH: Fencer Mileage Rating Approx. Wattage Cost per Month to Operate 20 miles 3.5 $0.22 50 miles 5 $0.31 100 miles 15 $0.94 200 miles 30 $1.89

turn on the fence, and if the dog comes back introduce him to a can of pepper spray. if he comes back after that and acts the least bit aggressive then introduce him to a shotgun and a shallow grave. (said in my best sopranoes accent) ;-)

use the cans made for bears. it is designed to engage targets at a farther range than the stuff for human attackers. AND remember not to spray into a strong headwind. i thought that warning was like telling someone not to shoot themselves with a real gun. something taken for granted. ;-)

I like those numbers. I wouldn't think it would cost much because all you are doing is keeping a big capacitor charged. Just got to replace the leakage though the wires. This is if I remember right. :p

silkiechikin,
its posts just like that which had me gender confused. how am i supposed to assume that someone who understands capacitors, voltage leakage and uses a car for an avatar is a chick? this place is nuttier than a fruit house...

Electric fences I believe are very low voltage. You can run them on small solar panels. I'd start with turning on the fence. You probably won't have to leave it on all the time as the dog will learn pretty fast. Add a line at the house for a while too.

If I were you, I would first talk to the neighbor. I would first introduce yourself and explain the situation. Let them know you are concerned for your animals and your safety, and then tell them straightforward that
#1 you really don't want this to be a problem
#2 if their dog comes back, you will call them and expect them to come get the dog.
#3 if that happens more then a few times, I would tell them you will then be forced to call animal control and let them deal with the situation as they see fit.
#4 if that does not resolve the matter that you will then be forced to protect you and your animals in any way you see fit. I am not saying shoot it RIGHT away. I would say try ANYTHING and EVERYTHING before you have to shoot it. loud noises, many people charging the dog, paint ball gun. (which does not leave the dog to die, it just is a warning).
Try shooting a gun NEAR the dog. If he continues to be a threat or certainly if he kills some of your animals then you have a duty to protect your property and you might have to kill the dog..

By this time you have given the owner..ohh maybe like 10 warnings of the outcome if he/she does not handle the situation. Like someone said, sometimes us dog owners are oblivous to our dogs actions(mine are all behind a fence 100% of the time) but I would CERTAINLY expect someone to work with me before they shot one of my dogs. Ohh and make sure you explain that any animal their dog kills you expect to be reimbursed for it incase that happens.

Sorry for the babble. Just remember you have to live next to these people for YEARS to come, try your hardest to give them a chance because people are petty these days, you never know what they would do just to get revenge if you just go and shoot without giving them fair warning.

I believe they are High voltage but LOW current... if I remember right... I'd have to look it up to be 100%.

Reasoning it... If it was high current, that wire would be hot hot hot. Then again, reasoning also tells me that that capacitor would be holding a large electric potential that can be built up over time so ... I'll spare details... It's generally current that kills you.

So when you make ground with the wire, the capacitor releases its energy right through you. Touch it with your toe instead of your finger as there is less risk of the current going though your heart and giving you a good fry.

shooting wild or domesticated animals with paint ball guns has resulted in litigation around here. be careful with stuff like this. if you shoot a dog with a paintball gun you could actually still kill him. shooting anything with a bb gun, pellet rifle, paintball gun or similar device can be litigated. low amperage electricity and pepper spray are defendable in the eyes of the law.

shooting warning shots at animals just teaches them that guns don't kill and will make them less wary of them in general. do not ever mention to the neighbor that you may shoot his dog. that is a threatening statement. you may ask them to keep them off the property but don't say "or i'll..." what if the dog disappears and you didn't actually do it in? since you were the one that threatened you will be the first to be questioned.

polite conversation, electric fence and pepper spray are your best alternatives IMHO. if those two don't work then try the shallow grave thing and never admit that you have seen the dog unless someone saw you pop it. it ain't pretty or anything but it works.

silkiechiken,
if i wasn't afraid of getting pecked to death in here i would be dragging out my best tongue in cheek jokes about a womans place and all that... one of my good friends wife has a phd in math and i love to go on with her about how a woman isn't wired properly for higher mathematical thought. of course it is all in jest, a person must have a sense of humor to deal with me IRL.

you are correct on the fence, very high voltage, low amperage and current.
