Sorry MichaelVcrowder-I can only say from the states I have lived in. Pennsylvania and up here in Maine, anything(animals) threatening your livestock can be killed without recourse. I agree if you just shoot a dog for being on your property, you will be litigated, but when you have LIVESTOCK.. I emphasize LIVESTOCK.. not pets.. you have the right to kill any animal threatening them. I shot the mink that killed my chickens. it is not mink season and I was told I could kill anything that came trying to kill my livelihood by the game warden. Every place has different rules just remember that. I agree, try the electric fence first. that may be all you have to do.

If your afraid to speak with the neighbor, leave a note, be nice.

Dogs running free in the country is common. I live AR. , on my new place , I am the only one in the area that has dogs in a pen. They all let them run free.

If you watch the Dog whisper my guess is you were intimidated by the size of the dog or angered by the presence of the animal and it reacted to your energy.

Try being calm and assertive, it really does work, but please contact your neighbor before doing anything that maybe destructive to the animal.

I love dogs, thats why I don't know what to do. I'm not scared of the dog, when it barks at me I just yell and jump at him and he takes off to the other side of the fence (but he still lives the next house down) I probably did scare him the first time it happened because he startled me as I came around the corner of the house.

He is outside all the time and they do not have a fenced yard. We lived in town and dogs are not allowed to run loose or they are picked up by animal warden. It is out in the country and I understand it is normal to let your dogs run free, (nobody else lets their dogs run loose, they walk them on leashes), but I am mainly concerned for my chickens and the trash he tears up.

Our fence charger is one of those pulsing type so it is not dangerous, its even safe for the chickens. I think I will try that first. I just have to go out in the snow and walk the fence line first to make sure all the weeds are down. (yuk)

Hey Newchickmom,

Is the electric fence even set-up to deter this dog?? It needs to be at the right height and the right side of the fence. It sounded like this was originally intended for horses. Which makes me think that hot wire is maybe too high and on your side of the fence. Also, if the dog is a jumper, the fence may not help.

I like all of the suggestion on this post. They sound like great advice. I tend to use my airsoft gun to scary the neighbor’s dogs when they come sniffing around. Paintball gun is out of air, but I think it should send a messege back home. But, first you need a talk with the owners.

Oh, and the fences are high voltage and essentially use no current. They don't cost much to operate because you pay for power (voltage times current); no current = no power. That is, until the something completes the circuit. So, watch out for those shorts.

Pellet guns and sling shots

If that doesn't work, catch him nosing around the chickens and pop him in the ass with a hot shot, after the first time, the sound alone should do the trick.

just call me redneck but i dont care. i told my neighbor to his face now.lol. his dog killed my chickens, had the dogs collar in my hand off of the fence. he said he would pay for the chickens. i said no just keep ur dog away from my chickens. because if he tries again or i catch him in my yard he,s dead. this was saturady afternoon. next friday 630 am ,wife said dog again. all i can say he got the 12ga buck shot.. some times ya just gota stand ur ground. i didnt want to kill the guys dog but i did tell him, no note, no call, told him to his face.

Yes Mountain Man, The fence was for horses. It's at least 4and a half ft high and has 5 strands of wire, the bottom line is about 12in from the ground. How do I tell how many or which lines are "hot"? It looks to me like they are all "hot"
