Neighbor's Dogs attack - your opinion??

My neighbors dog has killed a number of my chickens and I own 129 acres. The dog comes up to my house we have talked to our neighbors and got them to understand if they don't want to care of their dog that there will be a price to pay. Well I do believe when they go away on vacation they expect to come home to no more dog. It hasn't happened yet. But what worries me about the situation is I have a 5 year old and 3 year old who goes outside with me and plays in the play area and the dog had killed one of my chickens there. So who is to say that the dog wouldn't attack my kids. Needless to say I didn't get to my gun in time. If you do have a good standing with your neighbors hopefully they will be responsible and do the right thing. Because I know my neighbors and I have understanding that they my lose their pet. And I for certain am a person who really doesn't like the idea of taking away someone pet because I don't want it done to me. But if your going to have a pet you should be willing to take care of it and respect your neighbors property, unless they are maybe willing to pay our taxes and do the upkeep on you property, lol. Hope things go good for you.

I don't like the idea of taking away someones pet either. I cringe when driving and see a 'lump' in the road ahead. My first thought is that some little child may have just lost their best friend. I am always releaved when its just a plastic bag or piece of tire in the road. But the truth is that animals that are unrestrained are a liability and everyone has to do what they have to do to protect their family, pets and livestock.

dkvart1; I can tell that was horrible for you and I'm so sorry. I just want you to know that I think you are very responsible and I would choose you to be my neighbor any day...

Thanks noodleroo, it was a most difficult lesson to learn. An otherwise wonderful animal lost her life because her owners were irresponsible.

In most cases it always starts trouble with the dumb neighbors when you ask them to keep their dog up. I really dont understand what makes people feel their dogs own the world and can run anywhere and do what they please. Besides the chance of them killing someones livestock, or pets, they also go out and breed and keep stray dogs running wild and filling the animal shelters up, killing native wildlife, etc (this also goes for cats big time). I really have no compassion for this sort of thing, and take care of the problem immediately. They don't even need to know what happened to their dog, I would just get rid of it. If you don't like that idea, just call animal control and let them come pick it up...they dont need to know who called. Im sure there is a leash law? The law here is ANY dog should be chained or fenced at all times, anything running lose will be taken by animal control.

This is info I found about antifreeze poisoning:

Antifreeze poisoning causes a terrible death and it is inexcusable for a human being to inflict that kind of suffering on a pet intentionally.

Please-don't make an animal suffer!!!

Please dont set out antifreeze!
My neighbor put antifreeze in my dog's bowl (becouse of his breed) and my dog suffered a horrible death. He never even left our yard, but someone chose to end his life any ways.
If you want to stop dog attacks, then shoot them and end it, dont let them suffer.

Why do these threads always end up with someone suggesting an absolutely terrible way to dispatch a predator? Antifreeze?? Really??? Why not just SSS and be done with it? Or is the direct approach too painful??? I believe if you are going to kill a dog for whatever indiscretions justify it, it is your DUTY to see that it is done quickly and as painlessly as possible. JMO.

in m y instances to deal with free range dogs in my neighborhood my experience is that the owners really don't car e if they did they would have their dogs up like the law says if it is a dog that got out like they all can do from time to time that is a different story if you do not want to shoot to protect then get a live trap if you catch one it it turn over to animal control

BB Guns with a few pumps are perfect tools to aid neighbors in training their dogs to stay off your property. 4 pumps is sufficient motivation.

I had to shoot one point blank in the face on Thursday to get him to leave, the other got the message with a shot to the rear. My little Daisey red rider needs a little more oomph. These two were young dogs that chewed through their ropes, both had collars with name tags. They could not get in my pen, but were scarring the fool out of my birds and had them all under the coop.
