Neighbors dogs in coop. UPDATE! 2nd time. 911/charges/court today

I kow it is anything but true for all of you. But legally the birds are not worth more than what it costs to replace them. Maybe you can demonstrate lost income since you can't sell them now. in other words henow gets to buy your chicken for the next few months and your next thanksgiving turkey sort of thing. But good luck getting it since it is pretty much a given that you accept the risk of loosing by choosing to raise the birds in the first place. Nobody is going to considering the heart ache involved.
as for the damage to the coop. you are far more likely to get people to take that seriously than they ever will the dead flock.
Things have really changed. When I was young if you actually knew someones dog had killed your chickens they would actually go take the dog even if it had ran home. but I grew up in a farm community. chickens and that sort of thing where peoples livelihood and it was looked at far more seriously. To many people trying to escape cities and not knowing anything about country if you ask me. In fact dogs o our farm where shot on site. we didn't wait around to find out what damage they had shown up to do. They never came around for a friendly visit. So I didn't need the excuse that they had killed chickens or anything else. when people showed up to collect the remains they where told, "It was on our land" Period.

We live quite rurally. I am on ten acre so is he. There are 10 acres dividing us and 140 surrounding us. Many of our neighbors have chickens and pigs and horses and cows. He wants us to conform to his city way of thinking that the world revolves around him. A few months ago I got his mail by accident so I drove down his driveway to deliver it. He came out (with his dogs) I then told him I saw those dogs in my yard before (then I didn't know they were chickn dogs) He tried to suggest by bassett bit him. That was the last communication until now.
I will email him and tell him any further contact to be made by email. That way I have a record of conversation.
I will not allow him to return.

Here in my county if you have proof the dog killed another animal, they label it as vicious. To get your dog back you have to make sure the animal is contained at all times, there is a list of things you must do. If the dog gets out again and picked up, it gets destroyed.

Your neighbor is totally at fault, do not let them set foot on your property again. He should of kept his dogs contained.

Thank you all so much. Its good to commiserate. I emailed him and told him any further contact by email only. And that I was advised not to allow him on the property. The ball is in his court now. Sent him a bill cerified mail. I hope not to have to contact a lawyer.

That is also what they do here. One of the requirements also is that the offender has to notify his insurance co. and let them know that there is a registered vicious dog on the premises. The neighbor behind me had to find this out the hard way years ago.

If it were me, I would call the police/sheriff and file a report, not just with animal control.

So sad...

Since it sounds like the guy is not one you could reason with, I would price what it would cost to replace the birds, not chicks but what it would cost you to replace them now. I would get a few estimates on repairing the coop by a carpenter/handy man and any other damage the dogs may have caused. That is the very least he could do. I'm not sure how you feel about shooting a dog, but if it were me, I would drop them if they ever came back. Sorry you had to go through this. Some people are just nuts!!!
