Neighbors dogs in coop. UPDATE! 2nd time. 911/charges/court today

If my bird gets out and gets eaten, well "stuff" happens my bird should have been contained.

If an animal BREAKS INTO my "secure" (as secure as I can make it) enclosure and kills my chickens, I shoot it.
I would have shot the dogs that were inside my coop. End of story.

What did Animal Control recommend? I might call the (non-emergency) police line as well and see what they say. What are the livestock laws in your area in terms of that?

Yeah that. Since you have already notified the A/C and your neighbor, you will probably have to follow any of their rules.

It's in your best interest to research now what you can do when someone elses dog is on your property. Know your rights, we can all give the best intended advice buy every county and state have laws on the books for this type of situation.

In the past I have had a neighbors dog come over and chase my horses. We let the owner know ..next time we will shoot. Next time happened, the dog came into the barn attacked the stallion and my husband shot the dog in the stall. Called the sheriff to be sure and they came out and said to call the owner to pick up his dog and the law here states we were within our rights to dispatch the dog. I'd do it again for any of my stock. Livestock killing dogs come back and they mean business. None of it good.

IMHO this may not be the time that communications between you and the neighbor are wise and unlikely to help you in any way . I am very sorry for your losses . That being said , I'm curious as to why the neighbor knew you have a basset and accused it of biting him . Also , is he suggesting that the guneas on your property are attracting his dogs to behave in a predatory manner , or are your basset and guineas wandering off your property and being pursued home ? Either way his dogs came on your property , did damage to your building and flock , and he will undoubtably be held responcible at least in part in court .
Its hard for me to do at times , especially when I feel severely wronged , but I've learned to make myself look to see what part , if any , I have played in causing my problems . The question I would have for myself is if my fencing isn't holding the neighbor's dogs out , is it holding my dog and fowls in ? Whether it be a country way or city way , keeping ones pets and livestock on their own property is usually a legal requirement .
Again , no matter how you answer the question for yourself , your neighbor quite obviously was not keeping his dogs on his property . Hopefully this matter will be settled fairly and quickly , and I pray the emotional wounds you have suffered by these events be healed as well .

pips&peeps :

Here in my county if you have proof the dog killed another animal, they label it as vicious. To get your dog back you have to make sure the animal is contained at all times, there is a list of things you must do. If the dog gets out again and picked up, it gets destroyed.

Your neighbor is totally at fault, do not let them set foot on your property again. He should of kept his dogs contained.

Yes that exacly

.22 caliber CCI Stinger hollow points from a Ruger 10/22 and a shovel. End of story. If ya need something quiet use CCI CB longs. Quieter than a pellet gun with 2x the power.
oh and a shovel.

I'm sorry, but here in TN... you could have shot the dog and still billed the dog owner for the birds AND the income you lost (if you sell eggs/hatching eggs/birds/ect.)

I'm a dog lover... but they wouldn't have made it off my property. It's not at all your fault (like he said). It's his fault for not keeping HIS dogs on HIS property.

Sally (the basset) and Precious (the great dane) are both well known in these parts. Because I have identified my dogs both to neighbors and animal control. Sally had been mistaken for a pregnant basset that had been wandering the neighborhood. Animal control came to my home and I brought Sally out to show it wasn't her who was walking around. BUT they have gotten out in the past. I have long since contained them for fear of getting a citation. (I also did not want any trouble with the neighbors)
As for the guineas, The neighbor only knew I had them because he came over and saw them. He suggested the noise they made attracted his dogs. I have seen their dogs in my yard in the past (told animal control) but was unaware of their killing nature until I caught them with the chicken in their mouth.

I think I will call the Sheriff's office just to make a report and follow up on Animal Control's report.
