Neighbors dogs

What a devastating loss! I would be crushed if a dog came in my yard and wiped out my entire flock and then I'd be steaming mad!

I know some people will disagree with me on this but as a dog owner, I feel very responsible to control where my dog can and can't go. My dog has demonstrated that she doesn't always stay in the yard so she is put on a long tether when she's outside. It is for her safety first and foremost.

I hear stories of people that their dog got hit by a car, is lost or caused mayhem at a neighbors, or got in a fight with another dog and it turns out, the owner let their dog just run loose. They often blame everyone and everything for what happened to their dog. I have a hard time throwing a pity party for a dog owner that just let's their dog run loose when they fully know the dog leaves the property.

I'm glad your neighbor is willing to replace your flock and is not in denial but the outcome I would most be asking for is that the neighbor keep the dogs contained because next time I would be calling the sheriff and animal control. Don't think I could shoot a dog just because it came in my yard unless it was vicious and a threat to me, my family or my pets/livestock.

I feel the same way about my flock of chickens. They never leave the property because if they did, I would not let them out to forage because I'm sure the neighbors would not appreciate the poop or digging up of the garden, etc.

Owning pets or livestock means taking responsibility and making sure your neighbors don't have to deal with them...especially when they cause harm.

Again, so sorry for your loss!

Does anyone know what I need to do about our neighbors two labs came into our yard and killed all 22 chickens and my granddaughters 2 ducks. I now have no egg layers I lost incom on selling my eggs. My roosters were tame and very friendly including my Rhode Island Red rooster. I have been crying all morning and I’m at a loss as how I ask them to replace my chickens but with chickens that will start laying soon. Any suggestions?
I agree with farmer Connie except get authorities involved first then go with them to visit the neighbor.

I have been through that many times. The people nor the law would do anything, even though a leash law was in effect.
I haven`t lived in that area for over 3 yrs, but if something happens to someones dog, I`m still getting blamed. I had several dogs at the time, myself, but I knew where each one was at, because they were confined. They weren`t bothering the neighbors and I didn`t put up with the neighbors dogs bothering me...I love dogs, but a dog will be a dog. It`s up to the owners of the dogs, to see that they don`t bother anyone, but most people don`t care. They killed chickens, turkeys, peafowls, and guineas. I don`t even know how many. I never got one penny out of anyone. They would get dogs faster than I could do something with them. That`s just the way it is if you have neighbors. Where I live now, my nearest neighbors are 1/2 a mile away and keep their two dogs penned unless they are with them. Now it`s only the wild critters I have to deal with....

To the OP, I started this thread so folks like you would learn what to do to avoid having to face this scenario:

Most likely you were not aware that such a thing was possible, so suffered your horrible loss and are now deciding what to do about it. That is after the fact which is too late. What is needed is to get ahead of the curve. You do it because death is coming for your birds. Count on it.

For you and others like you who would like to avoid this in the future, go through the thread. It explains it all.

And again, sorry you had to go through this.
