Neighbors have a prob with my roo..

Take the high road. Just because other people are irresponsible with their animals doesn't mean that you should be as well. I personally like the sound of a crowing rooster, but I'm not sure I'd want to hear it at 3 in the morning either.

It sounds like you have resigned to getting rid of him anyways. If you're allowed to have roosters and you choose to keep him, I'd make sure to have locks on your coop/run. It doesn't really sound like your neighbors can be trusted.

what is the coop set up like? is light getting in at night? can you insulate it so less sound gets out and then let him out after 9am? There has to be a reason he is crowing ALL nigh I mean the do start early and sometimes crow in the middle of the night but I would think something is making him do it constently if it is happening when he should be sleeping. could a street light be shinning into the coop? could rats or mice be bothering him? do the hens make a commotion at night also or is it just him?

I had a rooster that would crow at night everytime my little brother came in at an ungawdly hour (1-4am) parents nixed the rooster (seems like the inconsiderate little brother should've gone IMO!) BUT ... that said - if you want to keep a rooster - I would blacken/block the windows for sure and if you could insulate just for the noise coming IN your roo might stay quite all night, but mine would crow at the noise of the car coming in and the headlights of the car, even when i covered the windows, he could still hear the car...

Can you get chicken ear plugs?

They were potbelly pigs and were in the house most of the time with us, so we know they weren't making any noise. Alright. You guys have convinced me. I didn't want to give him up in the first place but I certainly can't decide to just because my awful neighbors want me to. The crowing doesn't disturb me at all. It can just barely be heard through the walls in the first place. Honestly it is most likely the dogs barking that sets him off. There is no lights near the coop that could be doing it and there are dogs let out in the ally every night. Still need to get photos of him to get him identified. I had bought new chicks when I thought I was getting rid of Harem (roos name) so I now have even more chicks. Should be barred rocks from the look of em. I'll have twelve hens for my roo to tend to now. Maybe that will keep him busy.

I just bought a rooster FOR the crowing!

I too live in city limits with an, -ahem- small backyard barnyard. At the other place we're fixing up though, the neighbor keeps hens and a rooster. Their moving unfortunately, along with their roo, so I bought one just to put him out there with my lovely Silkie and Sebright ladies and let 'em crow his heart out. Nobody in the neighborhood will know the 'original roo owners' ever left!

I love my hens, but they just don't sing or strut like roosters do

I am hoping that my chicks and ducklings turn out to be hens though. I'm pretty sure one roo is the max I can keep, even with separate coops

pshh, parents. Who doesn't love to be awoken at the crack of dawn to the sound of roosters harmoniously singing, "HELLLOOOOO MORNING! N' ladies you are looking FABULOUS!"
