Actually it isn't... at least according to my state and county laws. Any animal harassing livestock can be put down without any further ado in Michigan where it is legal to hunt/shoot... obviously if your city/county has an ordinance about discharging a firearm that supersedes this but still...

Totally within my legal rights.

I encourage you to look up the laws on loose dogs. And I am a dog lover... Just hate bad owners.

Not to be a big turd, but letting your dog loose doesn't crown you as an idiot owner. Dogs, like people should be able to be free at some point, without any leashes or fences. No matter how insane that sounded, it's true. It would be cruel to never let your dog travel outside of its house.

Read my last post... in central michigan you may run afoul of somebody like me....

And that may sound insane.. and what I said is true... And it wouldn't be cruel to you, just to the dogs; for a failure by the owner.

I wouldn't have thought a lot about this much, mainly because I lived in an area for most of my life where people never complained about lose dogs because no one had any issues with them.

I guess it depends on where you are from, farming etc....

A dog can run a calf ragged, a pack can kill off a small herd of goats and sheep in no time flat.. Chickens? A jack russel can kill 20 in a matter of minutes.. Depends on what you do, where you are etc... If I lived downtown City ville it may be different.. but I don't.......

It depends on the dog itself and its breed too. I can understand a Jack Russel killing small livestock in a matter of seconds, but I'm not really sure if a Pomeranian would hurt or scare a cow.

Temperment is also a huge deal too...Where I did let my dogs loose in the neighborhood was semi-rural, everyones chickens, goats, horses, cows, etc. were in fenced land.

I have cause i do have to problem with loose dogs so i have called animal control to see what i can do about it. And you know what i did. I went and talked to the person. In my eyes shotting a dog because its on your property is not a dog lover, just because there owners are not good for them. Thats what animal control is for. And an animal loose on your property just checking things out is not harassment. If its not killing your animals why kill it?

Since I have animals on my property in cages, fences, fields, a loose dog is a stressor for anything on my property.

No, it's okay I get it. The whole thing does make plenty of sense, though it seems a little risky.

Ever see the cartoons about elephants and mice?

Have you ever seen a horse rear up and break it's leg because a dog/turkey/rabbit startled it?

Ever have to have a 'dozer come in to bury an 1100lb animal because it couldn't be saved cuz somebody felt fido should be "free" to roam around? All I am going to say on this from here on out.

You do realize that doing this is illegal. Unless they are killing your livestock you cant do this, and if this is how you treat animals you should not own any.

If an owner allows his animals to trespass and put themselves into harms way, they shouldn't own any animals.. Long story short.. If you live in Central Michigan, keep your dogs on your own property.. cuz I am a nice guy, but they start messing with me and mine, you won't get a polite knock on your door. You won't know what happened.

wow, you have no sense of the world. THEY ARE ANIMALS, they dont have a sense of boundaries if they haven't been taught this. So does that mean a two year old who walks onto someone elses yard should be shot two since they are trespassing? no it doesn't. Its called being polite.

Sounds like a city/country divide.... Boyd is right about dogs in the country. Here in the back woods of Texas, it is a crime to let your dog run loose off your property. Keep in mind that dogs, all dogs, are predators. Even your harmless teacup Fluffy can kill chickens. But neigther Fluffy nor Brutus will get a chance at my chickens if I catch them on my property at all. This is not a topic for neighborly discussion. We all know the law here and live accordingly.

Now in the city, Houston for example, you cannot discharge a firearm. If you have a dog problem, there is a good chance Animal Control will do something about it. Neighbors are close together and livestock is uncommon. So it makes more sense to talk with neighbors about maybe possibly could they please not violate the law so much.

As for a kid making a racket after 10pm -- law enforcement will respond appropriately if called. There is no excuse for this inconsiderate behavior. Since this kid has taken out two dogs and has mental issues, then I would get his name in front of the cops ASAP. Might be America's next serial killer.
