neighbor's pest (rooster)

Good question. Probably nothing. That's one of the things that make neighbor problems
really bad. People don't usually change. He'll just think a predator got it and replace
it. Let's all wish he replaces with a Buff Orp roo or other friendly breed.

And we all know that kid is gonna be watchin.

Who are we to judge whether or not the owner loved that roo? We're all assuming that since they let it out onto others' property, that they mustn't care much for it. But, everyone shows love in different ways. If they truly DO love their animals, isn't the right thing to do notify them?

I let my dogs out leash-free 99% of the time, as I live in the country. Some of my neighbors and friends think that's wrong, and that I must not care for my dogs like they care for theirs - they're dead wrong. My dogs are like children to me. But, they love to run, and I love to give them freedom...supervised, yes, but off leash. Many years ago, one of my dogs was hit by a car and killed. Yes, it was my fault, and I of course take full blame. However, whoever hit him drove off and didn't even ATTEMPT to notify us! It happened right in front of my house, so there's no reason why they couldn't have let us know! Perhaps he could have even been saved.

Wynette,We are in a rural area and I had the same thing happen to my pyrennees. But they went out of their way to run over her. Also had this happen to a Peking duck of mine. They crossed the road on occasion and this punk kid swerved to the opposite side of the road to run over it. I saw it happen. Then he had the gawl to go up the road and come back to see if he had done the job. (Not knowing I saw it happen.) I proceed to pick the duck up and stand in the middle of the road w' the duck in my arms waiting for him. Needless to say he got a tongue lashing he'll never forget!.

Now this is different. Any time I have hit someone's dog or cat I always try to notify them. Shooting someone's animal because it is causing trouble and running over it by accident are two completely different things.

Maybe he was worried you were a nutjob and would go ballistic? At least nobody ate him.

Ok, Ok. I should have resisted that. It's not good manners to use someone's tragedy to help illustrate one's point.
In all seriousness, I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is painful no matter what the circumstances. I agree, thay should have stopped and at least told you.
Yes, yes, I know there are some who will say "You let him run free, it's your fault" and somehow this makes it OK to not tell you about it.
No, I'm not trying to provoke anybody. One of the good things about forums is it opens up your mind to other points of view even if you can't bring yourself to believe them...

Of everyone I've ever known, including myself, that has allowed to let their dogs run free, they have always sooner or later ended up getting hit.
I had a 10 acre place back on a dirt road that saw little traffic, and even lost one there, a full grown black Lab.

My neighbor here, where I live now, just lost his Red Lab of 7 years the exact same way only two weeks ago.

It's just a fact of life now, with so many people and so many cars.

I'm sorry for your loss, we live in a dangerous world, It's easy to say, "well I should have done this, or should have done that" but the truth is, we aren't really in control.
I keep mine fenced now, but when he decides to go for a walk, he goes, and no fence is going to sway his decision.
All you can do, is the best you can do, and then you have to let it go at that, animals have minds of their own, and their going to do what they want to do, I guess that's what makes having them around the great joy that it is.

If I had my choice, I'd rather live 10 years free, out smelling the roses, than 20 years stuck safely in a cage.

Boy, I first chimmed in when this first posted and was disturbed by the post. This will however be the last time I say something.

First, I have no problem with the girl killing the roo. She was defending hers, fine. Where I had the problem was the lack of compassion ( afterwards ) to the situation. I don't live on a large working farm of any kind, but if I did, I would have my kids out there skinning, cleaning etc. so I can see how this may seem like no big deal. However, in my honest opinion though your neighbor was irresponsible for not keeping his bird on his property which resulted in it's death ( yes defending yours ) ,for you to NOT inform the neighbor either via in person or letter, to the events that occured, is no more resposible than he was. Just becuase he doesn't follow common courtesy rules shouldn't mean that you don't attempt to teach your children these values in a situation as this. Instead, my concern is that you taught your kids it's ok to just "shoot, shovel and shut up" as one person put it. This is where society goes and has gone wrong. No one takes responsibility for thier actions, good or bad.
If it were my kids, and the same events took place. Afterwards, I would at least attempt to tell them, "OK this is what happened and why, and just let the neighbor know you had no other choice" This way they step up to the plate and own it outside your 4 walls.
I see that instead you have taught your kids it's OK to be dishonest. JMO

I've said my peace.

Let me give you a "for instance" on the telling your neighbors what happened idea:

I have a good friend who lived next to his neighbor for years. They were great friends and did many things together. The neighbors dog kept killing my friend's chickens despite repeated pleadings with the neighbor friend to keep the dog locked up. So one day he shot the dog to eliminate the problem. He felt very bad about it and told his neighbor friend. The neighbor was very angry and the first thing he did was cut all of the branches of the trees off along the fence line between the properties. The next thing the neighbor did was turn his goats out into my friend's garden. This led to a whole series of ugly hostilities between people who up until then had been great friends for years. The hostilities continued until one of the parties moved away.

Moral of the story: Shoot, shovel, and shut up- human nature teaches us this.

What I'm saying is that if my trashcan blows on to your yard, you do not get to keep it.

Where I come from I am allowed to protect my livestock.
Aso there is no law, written or unwritten that says I have to go notify Mr. Irresponsable just how irresponsable he has been. Anotherwords so irresponsable that I had to kill one of his animals.
As far as the trash can gos, I labeled and weighted the bottoms of mine so I would not lose them. I have no neighbors, but if they consistently let their can blow into my yard and didn't retrieve it in a timely fashion they might just find it in my driveway with my name spray painted on it and a weighted botom so I didn'tlose it.
You can probably tell, but if I had to kill a nieghbors pest I would take it over and deposit it on his doorstep. Not because I feel an obligation to, but because as some one stated, it makes a strong statement.
However, some people are not comfortable making such a strong statement. Some people fear reprisal. This is thier choice.
All responsability lies on the owner of the trespassing, now dead, chicken. None on the land owner protecting his/her animals.
Tell the little girl good job. No one should be critizing here.
For any reason.
