My Coop
My Coop
I have 3 hens currently locked in their coop as they are just new and haven't had their wings clipped. Our neighbors also have some roosters free ranging around our property, I was worried if when I release our hens from the coop if the roosters will try to mate with my hens and have fertile eggs?? My questions are, how can I tell if an egg is fertile , Can you eat fertile eggs, and will roosters mate with my hens?

Back in the dim dark days of human history, in other words about a decade ago give or take a week, fertile eggs were considered a health food. I still don't think that eating fertile eggs will kill you but eating fertile will result in all of your children being born naked. At least all my children came into the world naked. :lau:lau:lau

How many roosters are there? I'd be more worried about them harassing your hens and gang breeding them if there are a lot of them. They would run your girls ragged. You might want to consider building them a run and keeping them contained until you figure out how to keep those roosters off your property.

There are 2 roosters and a 5 hens maybe??? I think one of the roosters is a big rhode island red aswell

Oh darn that was just down right funny :lau :lau :lau :lau

And that's why we only ate store bought eggs so that our children would be born fully clothed unlike your heathen kids being born naked

So yes you can eat them...some people just prefer not to.

From what I can tell, there is a little white dot in all egg yolks...when the eggs are fertilized, there is a little white disc around the dot.

If the roosters and the hens have access to each other, within a week I'd say you'll have fertile eggs
