Thanks for the link BayCityBabe, I will go to the library and print that info out. and show it to my neighbor. "friend" is RIGHT!

I will research it. It is creepy though, that "they" are in "cahoots" against me. I am getting more paranoid by the minute. I really think I am Personna Non Grada. in these parts.
But, I am trying to keep my chin up. I got 2 ferret harness' and leashes at a thrifty sale today for a buck and put the little harness on one of the little Seramas and took it to the neighbors on the other side (nicer but still love to gossip) and showed them my new little "bird". I said these where new and they were not chickens they were Malaysian Seramas.

They seemed "impressed"

Have you considered getting some of those Asian ground parrots as well

well I am just in tears,,,have been for days but now it is worse,,,,,I got home with 2 messages on my answering machine ,,,the landlord had called saying the city had called about junk and branches at my house and to call him ASAP. SO sounds like it is just going to be one thing after another and the neighbors want me to move it is now painfully obviouse.

by the way the "branches" have been there for 5 years when the tree fell down in the backyard. The landlord was supposed to clean up but after a year of waiting I got someone to clean up most of it. The small branches left over I put in a brush pile in the way way back of the yard. Is there a law against brush piles? I am very sad. The "junk"? who knows? Most of the people around here have some stuff around their yard?.

Hi Kris, I'm a little behind in posts here but read your last one. My inclination would be to call the landlord and cheerfully agree to take care of branches and "junk." (doesn't sound like there's much anyway). This may endear you to him and put this latest "fire" out. I'm not sure what's going on here with the "neighbors" but might as well conquer this small hurdle.
In answer to your question - I can't imagine there's any rule against a pile of branches. It's a pretty illogical sounding complaint, but as we know, it's not really about the branches at all...smokescreen........
So sorry you are having these troubles.........

thanks jjthink...... I did tell him the city could come look at my branches anytime they wanted

But then I went outside and burnt some.......not that many.......I would rather they just turn to dirt on their own but I guess I have to do it.

I'm sorry to hear about your difficulty Kris. I've been in some somewhat similar situations. Try to ignore them and don't worry about it. I know thats easier said than done. But it really doesn't matter what they think of you. Because what they think that they think of you is based on incomplete information. Any character judgement is always false because people can never really gather enough qualified information to pass proper judgement. Even people who have known you your entire life will be unable to correctly pass character judgement. So it really doesn't matter what people think, because they will always be in error. And at best, those who know us well, will only be half-right. So be free to be you, and enjoy those things which make you happy. Strange and normal are relative terms. Whats strange to one group of people will be normal to another. Take this BYC forum community for example. Some people would think us nuts for thinking that chickens have interesting personalities and are intelligent caring beings. Some people would make fun of us for this, and may think us strange our even looney tunes. So what!?! Let them be like that, because we will be like we are. They have their truth and we have our own. Who cares what they think!?!

However there are things that you may be able to do to help ease things. Your already working towards reducing any smell and you've been sensitive towards the neighbors in regards to the roo's noise pollution lol. And if the brush piles and/or unkept yard is bothering people then clean it up a little. I was in a similar situation as you.. minus the chickens but with gossipy neighbors who spoke ill of me behind my back in a small mountain town where my reputation mattered to me somewhat. They wanted me gone and so they attacked my charector like cowards behind my back. Some of the things I heard were complaints about me running a business in my home. All I was doing was making Tie-Dye T-Shirts from time to time and never sold them from my home. But it never was about my T-Shirts or my long hair etc.... I was renting a trailer in a trailer park in a small mountain town. It was a very hot summer and it was a drought year. I was often working upto 12 hrs a day for 5 days a week, and often worked upto 8hrs on saturday. In my free time I also harvested firewood for family and for profit. And I made Tie-Dye T-Shirts for sale. I paid no mind to my yard and just let it go natural. I didn't want to take the time to water and manicure it, nor did I want to pay the expense. And I didn't think it right to water since we were in a bad drought, and wildfires were burning out of control throughout the state.

Well naturally the grass died out... but hehe that meant I didn't need to mow it lol. But dandelions took over. I knew the parks caretaker pretty well and worked cutting firewood with him and hung out with his family often. He was the guy people came to to complain about me. And complain they did... about all sorts of things. But once I understood that the root problem was my lawn, I began to take steps towards improving it and my relations with my neighbors. So I watered to revive the lawn and prettied up the desolate landscape as best I could. Some time later a retired next door neighbor saw me watering and came up to talk to me. He was polite but angry and was clearly very frustrated with me. Turns out his problem wasn't the eyesore of my lawn. He was mad about the dandelions I was breeding. He worked hard in his own lawn and took much pride in it. But despite his hardwork he could not keep dandelions out of his yard since I had a dandelion farm right next door. So I dug them all out and kept watering. By the time the snow fell and covered my lawn for the season.. my neighbors became more friendly towards me. And I was never reported for illegally running a business out of my home. And all the other neighborly nonsense stopped.

Sorry for the long post. I can't seem to abridge my thoughts well. With all the above said... if you just can't be happy living there then you should move for your own happiness. If you can't then you just MUST not let them bother you. It doesn't matter what they think. Just do your part of responsible neighboring and know that its all good to be you! Good luck with it all Kris. I've survived it and more like it. I know you can as well!

Some people just have to complian.
You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time.
You just ignore em and walk around with your head held high and smile like the cat who got the cream.
that will sure make em wonder.
Im sure those people have no life but to gossip about others since there life is a not so happy one.
hehe you should make a shirt that says "I have chicks so what".ill even send you a fabric pen.or a shirt that say "i have chickens ask me about them"

now smile and sing this song you cant sing it without smiling you know...
Chin up, chin up
Everybody love a happy face
Wear it, share it
It’ll brighten up the darkest place
Twinkle, sparkle
Let a little sunshine in
You’ll be on the right side
Looking at the bright side
Up with your chinny chin chin…

Your landlord is the owner of that property, and unless it he put in your lease agreement that you are responsible for fallen trees, it's his job to clean that mess up. You should complain to him for making you live with the "junk" for the past five years. A tree fell in my yard when I was a tenant, and the City was on my landlord like a duck on a junebug!

On thing I've noticed thats helped with our chicen pen smell is to add alfalfa hay to their litter. It has a nice smell which helps cover up the fowl smell in their sleeping quarters. Outside I spray their yard down every other day or so and wash the poop into the ground. That helps alot. And I think adding pitchy pine shavings would help a great deal.

We get the alfalfa hay free! The feed store collects the bits which fall off the bales and gives it away. Its free good smelling litter and it also has some good nutritional value for the chickens.

Hows things going at your homestead?
