Nervous but excited about getting chickens

Hi All,

I'm Azzah from Vancouver, BC. I'm 42 and a single mom to a one year old. I am getting chickens because I really want to show my son how beautiful life can be with animals and gardens etc. The thing is, I have never raised chickens myself! So I just got a chicken coup made from a man who makes them for a living. I"m getting 3 chickens on Friday. I have the food, I have the tiny rocks they might want to eat, I have Earth Diacautimous (hope I spelled that right!) and I have the pine shavings. I also have a mix of sand and soil for the floor of the coop. What I think I'm missing is something called Sweet PDZ? I don't really know what it is but I hear it's a deodorizer for where they poop? It's sold out everywhere but if you could give me any other advice on what I should get and how I should start off I would soooo appreciate it. Welcome to BYC! Best way to keep things fresh until you can find PDZ again is to keep things as clean as you can! Have you decided how you're going to do that? With a dirt floor, deep litter method works really well! Personally I would skip the DE, I think it makes more of a dusty mess than anything.

Thank you so much! Sorry I know very little about chickens and starting literally from scratch hehe! I think what I'm going to do is scoop the poop out once a week? I was going to try deep litter method but it sounds very smelly! hehe. I guess what I could do is give it a try and see how it goes! Thank you!
