Nest box roof hinge leakage...

Jodie, Darkmatter, could you explain the "inner tube" method a little better?
I'm expecting to have the same problem soon.

Is it in liu of hinges, or does it go over top of the hinges?
How much overlap should I have?

Just stapled - nothing else?

Post pics please?

Thanks!

I used a old tractor tire inner tube, just cut a strip to cover the hinge and staple it on. On my nest reach in doors, I just stapled the rubber strip above the hinge--rain just runs off the strip rather then into the hinge area. On my "pop" chicken door, the door doubles as a ramp for the chickens with the hinge at the bottom of the door, I stapled the rubber on the inside opposite the hinge when the door is open so as to prevent the chicken poo forming concrete and interfering with closing the door-----that strip has been in place over 15 years and when closing the door it flexes and pops off any chicken deposits. There are coop pics on my BYC page which you might be able to see the rubber strips.

FYI, the plastic material on eggbid is not waterproof. The inner tubes sound better.

Go with the inner tube. It works great and a new tube is less than $3. You might want to consider swapping out your hinges for a piano hinge then put the inner tube under it.

I also use inner tube type rubber material. I put mine over top of the hinged area. Works great. Look at my BYC page, the 2nd picture has a good shot of the material covering the hinged area.

Change the nest box so that the back drops down and the roof section is fixed.
