Nest Box Size

I am building an 8' X 8' A-frame coop to house about 15 hens (White leghorns and Rhode Island Reds). I plan to have externally mounted nest boxes stacked 4 X 4 with each nest being approximately 12" wide X 12" high X 14" deep. Do these sizes make sense?

Yes, those sizes make since, but I went a little bigger 15"high X 15"wide X16"deep. But you will only need 4-5 nest box's for that many chickens. You will get 3-4 chickens laying in the same box everyday. I didn't believe it when someone told me that, and we put 12 nest boxes in (temp milk crates) and I get 3-4 eggs in one box everyday.

Yes those sound good. I think we went 13x14. Just a sugestion; put a 2-3' board in the front so that the nesting material stays in the nest! I've learned the hard way that a 1' board is not enough for some of my more exuberant nest building hens!

Don't make too many nest boxes. A friend that helped me build my coop wanted to make 6 and I talked him into 2. I have six chickens and 5 of the 6 all lay in one nest box.......go figure!
