My plan for nest boxes is to use tree pots. My parents are tree addicts so I have a wide variety of pots to choose from. My problem is that the pots vary in size so greatly. If I have different sized nest boxes will the chickens get picky about which they use?

Also, what would you say the average size should be. As I said, I have a variety from HUGE to smaller.

There are several threads on here that show what people do for nests. I'll give one so you can see there is a huge variety.

Size is not nearly as important as many people seem to believe. As long as the hen can fit in there, she can use it. Some seem to like close quarters while others seem to like more room. As a general rule of thumb, I'd suggest giving them at least 12" across where the nest will be, but I've had hens that hide a nest squeeze into much tighter areas. You do need something to start with if you don't have that experience, so I'll throw a number out there that I know will work. 12". If you have the option, there is nothing wrong with using different sizes.

Thank you. I'll use that as my average and put a few larger and a few smaller. See what happens.
