Nest Box?

I still haven't gotten them to lay in any other nest box besides the Litter Bucket nest box. And I am still getting an egg a day in it.

Very good idea, and thanks for sharing! The picture helped me understand. I don't always work with a full deck.

I'm all for re-using/recycling. And I didn't laugh at all. I've contemplated using the same thing. Litter buckets just seem to pile up.

HI,
I'm so glad to see this thread. I have a friend who told me to take 1"x12" boards and build nest boxes out of them. Build them in an "L" shape, so the hens can go in and hide in the corner. He said they don't have to be very long, maybe a foot or two on each part of the "L". Leave one end open and the other end closed. (Is this making sense?)

My hens are all free range, and I was going to build many of these over the winter and have them out in my property, ready for their use in the spring/summer.

Anyone ever tried these type of boxes?

Domromer,
I may have to borrow your idea too. I could try different size boxes. I may try the golf ball trick to get my birds to start using the other nest boxes. The ones I spent time meticulously making to the dimensions that I read about and copied, that they seem to ignore. But then again, if it works.....? Maybe I'll wait until all my birds are old enough to lay and see where they all prefer. I have some ideas to use a gutter and downspout set up to give them fresh water, but I will wait until spring for that one.

I went out to check on my birds, when I turned the light on all I could see was one in the Nest Bucket, but it was half way sticking out, then I realized I didn't see one of my girls, she was behind the other one inside the bucket. Now they are bantams, but I did not expect to see them snuggled in there together. That had to be a tight fit!! It was worth a good chuckle, wish I would have had the camera with me!!
