My nest boxes were made out of a "free" (found on the side of the road) kitchen cabinet. My gals are getting close to lay. I guess it's too late to change the boxes but I am open for any suggestions if they are too small. I did query on this forum before we used the cabinet & the consense was the size was OK. But now that they are in place and I have the chickens, I'm not so sure they are big enough

They could be an inch or two taller, but the depth and width are perfect. I always say 12X12X12

I think you'll be fine with what you have.

Good luck!

They look much better than what I saw in the pet shop before.
Well done!

I don't think you need worry about the size.
They are perfect!!

Hope you get eggs very very soon

Thanks everyone! I even put some BOSS on the little ledge to get them to "LOOK" at the boxes! The boss is gone but still no eggs...

I guess it's true: a watched hen won't lay!

They will probably start laying in their favorite place to relax. This is some old lattice that I put in their run. They love to sleep (during the day) and dust bathe under it and even climb up on it.

Here's Sassy, Verde, and Chucklelina under the arch part:

One sign that a pullet is getting close to laying is that her comb (and wattles, if she's of a breed that has those) will get bright red. It's a sign that her hen hormones are surging. Your girls look like they're not quite there yet.

Another sign to look for is the mating squat. The pullet flattens herself down on the ground and sometimes even spreads out her wings as you approach her (or your rooster, if you have one).
