My cochin has started laying eggs--all over the yard instead of the nest boxes. Can I use a hard boiled egg for a nest egg? I want to hurry and encourage her to use the nest box and it tales a week or two to get wood or ceramic eggs.

I'd be afraid they would peck the egg and get the good stuff inside, and start pecking all the eggs. Get a wooden egg from a craft store or like new2chooks said, golf balls.

Thanks for the help! I guess I will have to try to get to the burbs and see if I can find some fakes. I went to Michaels, but they were out. The farm store didn't have any. Maybe sculpey?

I have ping pong balls in mine.

However, they haven't begun to lay so not sure how it will work.
Just throwing out an idea!

My girls haven't laid an egg yet but I have salted my proposed nest bock with a golf ball, a tennis ball, and a wallnut.

While I was busy trying to figure out what to do, making Sculpey eggs and dithering, my hen, Bette, got in the nest box on her own and laid an egg...
