I have wood built nest boxes with plastic bins in them to make clean up easier...got the bins for $1.

Wood. Free if you make your own. We turned this nightstand into a nifty 3 box nestbox. They use the middle two spots the most.

I had 6 wooden boxes, scattered around the coop at various heights but not one hen laid in them? I read about the plastic ones at fowlstuff.com, got two and they now take turns on laying in them! They're great and a lot more hygenic
