My coop currently has a nesting box situated up high, accessible via a loft. I am going to move the nesting box below because otherwise they sleep and poop in it at night. I want to know if they'll use a nesting box when there is also a loft above, or if they will always choose the higher space. If they will choose the loft then I will have to remove it, which is not a major issue. Any thoughts, experiences to share?

If they've already been using the nest box where it's at, some birds may continue to lay up there in the near future. Otherwise they don't have a particular need for boxes to be elevated at all, like mine are floor level.

Can you block off the 'loft'?

Nests only need to be higher than roosts.
ETA: Roosts only need to be higher than the nests.
