well they said that there are "point of lay chickens", and i think the place i'm getting them from said that they are 5 or 6 months old and i heard some were that it would be 2 or 3 weeks till they got over being in a new place and started laying. is this true??

It really depends on the bird itself. Some get used to new places quickly and begin laying the day you get them. Others, however, can take a month or so to start laying. The place you are getting them from may have meant it would be a couple of weeks before the chickens began laying period.
