My almost-six-month old BLRW cockerel is becoming quite the chivalrous guy! He’s feeding his girls, calling them over for food consistently wherever he finds something yummy, stops eating and steps back whenever one of the girls comes over to eat from my hand too, breaking up fights when the nine-month old pullets are bullying the six-month old pullets, crowing like a mad man, and dancing, dancing, dancing. Okay, he’s not quite there yet as he often can’t quite find the right position (I try so hard not to laugh when he topples ass over teacart over on his head...), but he’s not aggressive with his harem or with his bipeds.

What I find amusing is when he goes into the coop, sticks his head in the corner, and clucks like he’s going to lay an egg. He’s also gone into the nest box once to sit for a few minutes and points out prime nesting spots outdoors in the woods. He also sings the egg song whenever one of the girls does it. Is it possible that he’s trying to show the younger pullets (who are at the point of lay and the same age as he is) what to do, or at least, where to do it?

It is normal behaviour for a rooster to check out nest sites and try them for size, comfort and security and encourage the girls to come and try them out and yes they will sing along with the egg song too. You are lucky to have such a mature and well mannered and handsome young man for your flock. I hope your girls realise how lucky they are too.

Shoot, I wish I would have seen your run snowman earlier today! I had to go out to shovel part of my run out just so the little stinkers would come out of the coop.

I should have just built them a snow man! Fun idea (at least, more fun than shoveling)
