we band at 12 weeks, they are all up to date on their CDT by that time. We put the band on then spray with wound coat or somthing similar, we may add more later when they start to separate. I am not sure that I find it inhumane, none of the methods are painless, even at a vet with a numbing agent they are going to have a wound to heal from. I find it is a good "at home" method that is less susceptible to infections and causes discomfort for a short amount of time.

I separate my boys for them girls at weaning and wait till the testicles are almost to big to fit in the band and that is when I band mine...Like helmsted said the longer the better.
