Nevadans?

Welcome aubreynoramarie, No help from me on finding hens. Most of my birds are just babies and those are seramas. You need 5 eggs from them to get what equals one regular chicken egg.

Horsefeatherz, if you find yourself having to kill any of the rattlers, I am interested in their skins. I know a lot of people that make pens out of them. But don't kill a snake for that reason. I agree that they should just be left alone unless they are going to remain a risk. But if they do die might as well use what can be used.

laceynoelle, did you do that Daddy's little girl thing on your dad to get him to agree to a Rooster? I was a cruel thing God did when he made that part of a mans heart. My daughter said she was thinking about getting something the other day (I forget what it was) I asked her how she planned on getting it since she doesn't have a job. SHe looked straight at me serious as can be and side "Daddy I waaaant"
Sad thing is it works so very well most of the time.

Beautiful birds you have, Horsefeatherz! I'm going to have to show the rattler pics to my husband. He is terrified of snakes! I've only seen a corn snake on the property behind us. People keep saying be on the lookout for scorpions here, but I haven't seen one yet. Mostly the biggest threat would be hawks and falcons. I usually see hawks circling a pigeon flock here and have seen a falcon munching on one in my driveway.

Keep up the good work!

Genny here are a couple of your gals. They are looking so grown up.

The EE is in front and 1 of the Del/Blue Orps is behind her. Aren't they pretty?

Penturner - I will let you know should I have any skins (sometimes I find a run-over on the road - can those be used?) - what is the best way to keep them for you?

Knemeyer - Thank you very much.

These pictures were taken 5.25.10 so are almost a couple weeks old, but these are the hatch siblings to yours that I kept Sunny. The rumples was a late hatch (day 25), when candling eggs to toss from the bator I saw her little beak thru the membrane and she cheeped at me. The gold/blue is an Orpington cockerel – same father as the rest but a buff orp mother .

A side shot of the rumples girl – she is the one above peeking around the cockerel - I am just in love with her chest feathers!

Hello All. New to chickens and new to the site. I live in Reno (within the McCarran loop) and am just preparing to build a coop/ hen house. Looking forward to it!

At some point, after construction, I'm going to need to get some chickens so any help in that endeavor will be appreciated.

Also, SunnyDawn, after viewing your page and the pictures of your baking, I think we should become good friends.

Take care, all!

Welcome Echetino,

Horsefeathers, just freeze them whole is the best way. I can pick them up and get them back home easy enough that way. Road kill is fine if a fair amount of skin is still intact. If it has been hit several times don't bother with it. And remember dead rattlers are still poisonous. Don't mess with the heads the mouth still has a bite reflex or getting curious and looking at the fangs you can get a stick and it will still be venomous.

Ya'll have some very pretty birds there. I hope the Silver Sebright Roo I have will come out looking even close to that well marked.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this in the Nevada thread., so I apologize if this is a repeat. I posted it in several places and have lost track of where.
I think we have confirmation that Fuego is fertile in the incubator right now. due to hatch in 7-9 days. Heilo is setting on 3 more that are 5 days behind that.
We are making Heilo a place of her own to raise the chicks. I think we will have to move the living room to the back yard when that happens.

Welcome to all the new northerners!

If anyone is interested I will have hens that were hatched last summer ready for sale in late July/ August...as soon as the sexlinks start laying. I've decided to focus on the egglaying machine breeds for a few years to help with that new 10% increase in tuition at the same time they do away with the Millenium scholarship! So my "heritage" breeds (all hatchery stock) will be moving out to make room for the new girls.

3 delawares
2 barred rocks (they are the oldest, hatched March 2009)
3 EE's (all lay green eggs)
2 RIR (the youngest birds, hatched in late Sept 2009)

My neighbor will also have about 3 more green laying EE's from hatch last spring.

All of mine are Privett stock, my neighbor's EE's are from Ideal. $8 each...all are laying and I am getting an egg per day from each, with a day off here and there.

Keep it in mind, let me know by PM if you want to "reserve" anything in particular. I'll post whatever is left when they are ready to go.
