Nevadans?

Any big plans today? I only have one client, at 5:30. And I slept in late, and lost a 4-hour chance to get work done. My husband wants to grill up some chicken, then we'll probably walk downtown for something.

Pretty quiet here today.... The neighbors have been previewing their fireworks all week, though. Tonight will be nonstop from sunset until midnight. It's really cool to look down the valley and see all these pops of color all over the place...kind of like watching a hyperactive lava lamp, but more colorful. Most folks get buckets of fireworks from neighboring Nye County (which apparently won't allow you to shoot them off there due to fire hazards, but have no problems selling them to folks in Clark County who cannot buy them here because they're illegal.... go figger). Our neighbors front and back do the pyrotechnic thing. Our dogs are pretty unaffected.

Henderson moved the BIG official fireworks display to Mission Hills Park, which -- unfortunately -- is on the other side of Black Mountain and not the easy viewing as it was in previous years from Basic High School (two blocks over). Our neighbors years past would all get out the lawn chairs and have an impromptu party at the end of the street. So I guess this year we'll just BBQ in the backyard (no fireworks, just a smoker)

Happy Fourth of July to everyone!

Remember, every day can be a parade if you want it to!

My MIL street usually has a get-together but it's not going to be as big this year as in the past. We usually start at one house and end up at another to watch fireworks and have desert. But this year most of the neighbors have other plans and I'm working. My MIL is hosting the dinner and desert portion this year. I'm not sure how many are coming though.

It's so strange to come home after 11pm from work to find everyone in bed including all of the birds. It's just so quiet. One more night of this swing shift and hopefully I won't be doing them anymore. Last week I started on day shift, went to Graveyard and then back to 1 day shift and then 2 swing shifts. I'm getting 1 day off tomorrow with John. I wonder what's on his to do list since we haven't been able to talk much. He says hi to me when he leaves to go home from work.

I honestly dont know what to do tonight. I really want to go out to Fernley to watch fireworks with my family but that probably wont happen since I have to wait for the birds to go to bed before I can even leave the house.

GOOD NEWS!!! yesterday our house hit almost 90* and its still basically the beginning of summer so Ive just about had it already. My dad is coming over Friday to instal a swamp cooler in our bedroom! last year our bedroom reached 120* during the day so you can imagine how happy I am. ALSO! Markie has approved the installation on a swamp cooler in the coop. Maybe we can try a homemade one there!

We're still dealing with trying to get water hooked up around here. I can't remember if I posted but our well that has been good since the 70's started failing so we're having to hookup to the water district to the tune of about $30K

! The water line is on the other side of the road and we have to pay to bring the line over. $15K just for that.....you'd think they'd want the business. The finally brought their water line down into this area last summer and because they wanted to much, no one hooked up on it, so you think they'd jump to add 3 new customers. Ours, my parents and their travel trailer park but they charge US to bring the line over. Oh and the two neighbors closest to us wanted to hook up too but they won't let them put their lines in our hole that we're putting in (were hoping to split the cost), they're making them dig the road up 35' down!

Anyway, I digress...we aren't really doing anything for the 4th because we're still digging lines and moving fences to keep the horses out of the ditch and laying waterlines....we hope we can make it out on the lake in the next couple of days but we'll see how far we get. I'm baking some apple pies because I can't help with the ditch because I'm still recovering from my back surgery. Kills me, my 75 year old mom is in that ditch and I can't help!

They have awesome fireworks out at the dam on the lake we live next to but we'll miss those. We've already had our share of fireworks when someone let off some commercial quality fireworks over our house at 2:30am last week. We think they were trying to let them off towards the lake in front of us but they went the wrong way. It was one of those that make a big ball but it went wrong and exploded tree level! Scared the daylights out of us. At first I thought it was someone shooting a rapid fire gun, then the sizzle, then the boom! I called 911 and my husband got in the truck and chased the car. After chasing them with speeds up to 90mph, he got the license #. I had trouble getting dispatch to send a firetruck because she thought I was just calling about someone letting off some fireworks. After lots of arguing the urgency and her telling me the firefighters wouldn't get out of the truck to look for fire she finally sent a truck.

When I told the firefighters about how much trouble I getting getting dispatch to send them they told me they had trouble with her and that I did the right thing. They said the fireworks were commercial grade and they had law enforcement on their way (I couldn't get law enforcement to look for the car either). He said it was a felony. An investigator called me the next morning and apologized for the dispatcher and said this was very serious!

Happy Independence Day, however you spend it. Have fun and be safe!

i did an updated count and I now have less than 40 chickens. that's good, right?

You started out big from the beginning because you knew how many you wanted and you're helping us with our flocks too when you need to get rid of some. I'm at 17 birds, 10 chickens and 7 ducks and to think John only wanted 3 hens. Then he wanted a duck and I'm at 17. For me that's a lot of birds in my small yard and next year I'll be hatching BLRW's.

Monique has been broody now since April and shortly thereafter Sylvia and Sierra joined in. Sierra gave up once her eggs were broken from the chickens arguing on whom was going to sit on them. I'm seeing Monique and Sylvia are out of the coop more often now but they both are still so broody. I think they are trying to see who can sit the longest. I just want the contest to end now and not see anymore broody's this year. Do you think that can happen? I'm getting 1 to 3 eggs a day atm and my customer's are not too happy being on an even bigger waiting list now. Yesterday I had 3 people tell me they need a dozen eggs. I have 1 dozen right now and hopefully by tomorrow I'll have another. The 3rd person will need to wait until next week.

I'm selling my chicken eggs for $5 a dozen now and duck eggs are now $10 per dozen. Has anyone else raised their prices this year?

Nah, I sell mine for 4 bucks a dozen and at the end of the month i buy feed with it, not even the cheap stuff but the layena and I always have money left over to buy treats and pine shavings. Usually 3 50 lb bags.. Not bad for less than half of my birds laying. I like this hobby, it pays for its self!

We're barely even selling! I'm getting 4-5 eggs a day, with my 3 broodies. Our only current customer is Sahara's yoga teacher, and she's such a great friend and resource that her prices are staying put. We'll see what happens when we get more eggs.
