Nevadans?

Echetino,

Sorry to hear about Opal. Just an FYI, I do feed my chicks medicated feed for the first 3 or 4 weeks then un-medicated and transition to adult food. Hope that helps with the chick you got from me. I don't know about Avocado being bad, I do sometimes feed it to my chickens (they don't seem to like it that much) and haven't had any problems, but one never knows. I think adults are less susceptible to a lot of that kind of stuff because I also feed them cabbage without incident but I've had chicks die from it too.

Here's a website that might be helpful to you for what you should not feed chickens: http://www.poultryhelp.com/toxicplants.html . The guy that runs this website is great. He really knows a lot about chickens and he does not list Avocados but he does list cabbage. He also has links to other websites with toxic plant lists at: http://www.poultryhelp.com/link-toxins.html

Good Luck!

Funny how some of you are talking about how exacting some of the directions are and how they can drive you crazy. I've even gotten up in the middle of the night to check up on them and obsessing over the temps for my chicks. Now I just say to myself, "How does nature do it?" Amazing how all these animals managed to procreate and raise their babies without us! LOL!

We been busy doin' the first of the month runnin' to town fer supplies, took the granchickie fishin' and she skunk'd us!
Got her limit in under 30 minutes. After a fish fry we're headin' back to town fer ice cream & fireworks.

Anyhoooo..........I'm readin' yer replies and soakin' in the info.
So I can stop holdin' my breath about the humidity to some extent.

I cant get an accurate readin' on the durn hydometer (s), even after calibratin' the blasted thangs!
One read 45% ( digital & not adjustable) the other 55% ( adjustable & non- digital--- a regular thermometer w/ hydrometer )
and accordin' to the instructions fer calibratin' they should've read 75% after the 8-12 hours in the bag with salt water.

My husbands says they aint any good. I'm confused, as usual.

Evonne, reckon I'm bein' a tad bit OCD about it

Horsefeathers, Evonne & Penturner, please share with me, what you use and how ya monitor the humidity in your bators?

Penturner, The hen has decided she's had enough and the eggs under her are cold. Not sure how long, or if she actually sat on the fer any length of time. Placed 3 under her on the 1st of July. Should I toss them and use fresher eggs or have they been kept in "limbo" and good fer the incubator?
I found 2 fresh eggs in the coop today so I aint without fresher eggs.

I agree that nature will take its course in most circumstances.
However, I still hate to see anything die...especially if its due to this human doin's and it could've been avoided fer the most part.

To make sure I gave ya'll accurate info to relate responses to,

I'm using a LG w/Forced Air Fan ( model 10200) & and an Automatic Egg Turner.

I feed my chicks a medicated chick started until they're six weeks, and then they go on an all purpose feed til egg layin' time.

Okay everyone. I wanted to share this pic i took today of my large cochin, Ember's eye. Its two-toned. I think its really pretty. Does anyone else have a chicken or two with wonky eyes?

And here's prince, an ee of undetermined sex. lol and jst so you all know, this wasnt me randomly taking close-ups of chicken eyeballs. I needed them to model out thier eyes for me 'cause i was drawing dragons for my cousin jake. Chicken eyes make the best dragon models.

half the time i'm lucky if there's water in there at all.....

and i usually add water at lockdown, but i just fill the things at the bottom and wait for pips...

this is gonna sound silly, but if i do want to check humidity, i put my face close to one of the larger vent holes and breath in through my mouth... i can feel the humidity... i don't know what % that would be, but i know if it's there and if it's too low... lol...

i don't even own a hywhateverdohickeythingy
