Nevadans?

Forgot to say... Elizabeth I love that outdoor roost. I never thought about it til I started planning the pen for the new peafowl. They will need places outside to roost for sure and I realized it would be a great idea for the chickens too.

Bummer! It still won't let me edit the opening post. I don't get it, I can edit the posts I just submitted.

Oh wow, I missed some of your pics Elizabeth. I'm sorry. I love the roost you made and your flock is fantastic too. I guess it was hard to catch up with over 100 posts?
thanks, sheryl. It can be hard to see everything with so many posts.
Cool pics!

My tomatoes, alas, are no more.

Got a major infestation of horn worms and then the fruit on them either cracked or mushed out at the bottom.

However, the local Hispanic markets are have a heyday with fruit and so I'm going to put up some jams and jellies....may even do some salsa. The black plums are really luscious (makes a great ginger jam) and I'm thinking some peach/hotpepper chutney. My neighbor has a prickly pear so loaded with tuna rojas that it looks like Christmas and he's offered to let me have 'em (which makes for a great batch of magenta colored syrup for drinks and jelly). But I am SO envious of y'all that have the fresh produce. I can hardly wait to move out of this god-forsaken desert to have the ability to grow something.

I love all the *dining* chicken names. So where's Stirfry?

Aubrey, your chicks are adorable!

Bedbugs suck! (literally and figuratively) There's a website -- www.bedbugregistry.com -- which lists places you probably don't want to stay. It used to be one or two offender in Las Vegas on the Strip, but now they're pretty pervasive and all over....and all over the U.S. Hint: When you travel and stay in a hotel do NOT put your suitcase on the floor or bed.

Loving the monsoon season down here, but not so much the humidity. We were that location in Henderson that got 1.3" in 20 minutes. I had just let the two dogs outside and I noticed two big plop drops on the patio and thought to myself "Man, if that were hail, it would be pretty big." And then all heck started to break loose. I called the dogs in. Tibbs got in right away. The difference between a dry dog and a thoroughly drenched dog (running inside with her eyes closed) was 6 seconds. It was just a wall of water that erupted. We had about 3" of standing water in the backyard at spots. Pretty intense. (but great not to have to water the yard for a couple of days!)

Hope everyone else is enjoying summer! It's almost SHARK WEEK!!!!!!
sorry about your tomatoes. cool you can get your hands on those tunas, though. i bought some jelly made from those when I was in arizona once and it was good.
Elizabeth, how do you like the patty pan squash? We haven't grown them before. I just do zucchini for summer squash because it's such a guaranteed crop. I mean... if all else fails, and you didn't totally mess up your garden, then you'll still have zucchini. Winter squash is different; I go for short season and storage, with taste being a side bonus. But I haven't heard that patty pan fits into either of those categories, so I haven't dedicated any space to growing them. Any input?
well, I have just gotten the one patty pan fruit so far so I'll let you know at the end of the season how it goes. I got a summer squash sampler pack from park with several zuc varieties and a patty pan sampler. i have tried pumpkins before with no luck. this is my first year trying the small sugar pumpkin and the small wonder spaghetti squash. I actually eat a lot of spaghetti squash so I was excited to see that small variety. It is doing well. I didn't venture into any of the other winter squash.

I need to put a tarp over that part of the run for summer, then I think they may use it more. I saw it on some byc coop pages and thought it would be cool.

Hey guys I have a little question about Bedbug. She just seems very.., slow...

I had helped bedbug hatch because when she pipped mama got off the egg for four hours and the membrane was stuck to her face. If you notice at the end of the hatch video the membrane is also stuck to her butt, I had to help detach her and clean it off. Anyway maybe that has to do with her imparities, I don't know I've never dealt with this before.

So this morning I went to let everyone out of the broody crate so mama could stretch and everyone could run around and start learning to eat and everything. Well baby # 1 was running around like a little spitfire and listening to mama and being generally adorable and verile. However bedbug was just moving very slowly and wandering away from mom and not listening when mom was calling her over to eat. At one point she did waddle over to mom and tried to crawl under her buy mom was busy eating and moving around. Since it was still chilly this morning I decided that since bedbug wasn't staying near mom they needed to go back in the crate until I could get home and keep an eye on them. She does seem like she has a hard time pooping and doesn't seem to open her eyes all the way. She's just very slow... I would almost even think she was deaf the way she was ignoring mama.

What do you guys think?

Is there any membrane left covering her ears? Also, check her vent to be sure that the down isn't glued down by the early "poop". It's pretty wet/sticky if they aren't able to spread the fluff when they go. A warm, wet q-tip will clean it off. I would probably get some quik chik in their water and be sure she gets a drop or two to strengthen her. Good luck... hope she perks up.

I will double check her ears when I get home but her vent is definitely clear, I checked it a few times.ill get some electrolytes tonight, gave her some polyvisol last night but she gagged for a half hour afterwards so I don't think I'm gonna do that again

Thaaaaank youuuuu

I understand what you're saying and I'll get a q-tip in there to be certain. She's two days old now so has been dry for a while and did poop on me last night but this morning she seemed to be straining so it could be up in there. I'll give her a warm q-tip bath lol

ETA she also still has that weird little scabby spot where her body absorbed the yolk.

That's normal. They'll have that for a while and at some point, it will fall off. When she hatched, was her abdomen completely closed?
