Nevadans?

Hi ya'll - I know I'm still new here but just got caught up on reading all of the posts - an exciting group we have here! We just got back from a week in Cabo
cool.png
- feeling nice and relaxed - taking the dd's & their friends to Tahoe today to try to cool off.

DH is working this weekend but next weekend, we will finally finish building our coop! I think I will put some of that covering they make for patios and playhouses as shade over the pen. Does anyone else use it and do you take it down in the winter? I am going to buy some misters to install too - what height do you put yours at?

Then the search for some pullets start - I am thinking about waiting until it isn't as hot - I don't want to overstress them by moving them to a new coop then add in the heat. What do ya'll think? If I can't find any pullets locally, I might go to Sacramento (oldest dd lives there) and bring some back - do they travel well over the hill?

Thanks for the patience with all my questions...

, I have pullets - from a couple weeks to point of lay. My birds are mixed right now - I have a Splash Orpington Roo and hens of different breeds - Dels, EEs, Orpingtons, Cochins. The birds here free-range on 11 fenced acres and run with ducks, geese, horses and our dogs.

For shade here I use the black kennel shade fabric (I do need more), mine do not have misters but I do go out a couple times a day and run the hose to flood the ground in shade areas. They like to stand in the water, drink from the hose and peck at whatever floats.

I would worry more about the cat poop than the chicken poop. Our dogs eat so much poop – it would turn your stomach if I started a list

. Sorry he is feeling very poorly – is he eating/drinking? Gosh I hate to say it, but I know Parvo is going around in Reno – so if he has diarrhea I would definitely visit the vet. Have you taken his temp?

Hello All,

I hope you're all beating the heat! Can somebody please enlighten me as to what "DH" stands for? My imagination takes me in a couple of different directions.

Thanks,

Jason

I have some of Genny's birds and they are great gals! I especially love the EE X blue Orp cross. She is gorgeous and has already figured out how to steal food from the older hens! She is very curious and friendly too! Genny do you hve any more like her? I'd love another one.

She needs to be between 14 weeks and POL so she fits in with the others.

yeah, hes kept up on his shots, and i believe parvo is one of the vaccines. turns out he caught some kind of nasty stomache bug from drinking the river water (go figure). hes feeling better today though. good thing for the girls, too...theyre happy to have their backyard privilages back!

That picture was taken at the National Automobile Museum in downtown Reno. If you've never been you should check it out some time! That's the only one you're allowed to actually get in, but they have period costumes you can dress up in and then take your picture in that car.

Ya know, I'm not too picky

- I only want about 6-8 that will be close to laying - I do like the idea of the EEs ('cause of color of eggs) but want a mixture of chickens. My coop will be 4x8 and the run is about 20x17 - I hope they will be okay after going from free range to a coop and run!

During the school year, we won't be able to flood the ground - no one will be home - so I thought I could put the misters on a timer to help cool things off. I will have to look into buying the kennel shade fabric - maybe that is more durable...

I will contact you when the coop is finished and we can talk a bit more - thanks so much!!!

Thanks Aubrey - I thought the ride would be okay just not too sure if chickens are affected by the altitude changes.

BTW, we had a great day at Tahoe - started bumpy though - waited in line at Sand Harbor only to have them close it 5 cars in front of us!!! (the park was full) - so we uturned it and went to Kings Beach. Got home before this storm started to kick in - keeping fingers crossed that there won't be any fires from the lightening!
