The shortest I've ever had... 4 days.
The longest... 3.5 months, through 3 failed hatches, and finally I adopted chicks and put them under her. 8 or so weeks after that, she started laying again. So about 5.5 months total.

In the case of my Silver Phoenix hen ( I have a few, but this one OMG) if she sees an egg, she's broody, if she thinks someone is going to lay an egg, she's broody. I let her hatch out eggs last month and she's broody AGAIN! Last time I let her hatch out Phoenix eggs and this time she has eggs from my other pens, plus 4 Phoenix that she inherited. The time they should be broody?? At least 21 days to hatch chicks, but a few days before to be sure. Then it depends on the eggs. If they don't all hatch at the same time, they usually just take care of the first few and leave the others, but some people have had them stay. I had one hide a nest last year and she came home with 18, another 15 another 13. They had to have set for a long time to get that many out.

I really wanted to either keep the white one or give it to my niece that has been waiting forever for one. I'm debating breeding this doe again. It's hot here and although they don't want to breed any other time, I just don't know. It's almost to that point where I'm running out with frozen water bottles again. But I sure would like to get another litter with these colors.

Amanda - my Amanda is still sitting on her unfertilized eggs even though she's got chicks climbing all over her. You just can't tell how long any bird will last.

I am hijacking the chicken-related nature of this thread to post.....KITTENS!!!! Our stray cat (who adopted us two months ago) popped out seven kittens. We have five homes lined up, but that leaves two kittens unspoken for! Their Momma is a sweetheart who tolerates dogs, chickens, and kids. They will be hand raised until at least 8 weeks, being loved and handled by people, kids (once they are bigger) and probably thoroughly sniffed by our big dogs.










Tonight I will try and get pictures of the new birds I adopted from SunnyDawn, I was so happy to see them get along rather quickly. I have no time for hen-pecking and coop drama!
