Good morning everyone!
quick question before I go to work:
Can chickens smell? I am still having problems with my neighbor's cat. Moana Nursery has coyote urine in sprinkles. I was thinking of putting it on the 2x4 at the top of our 6 ft fence to keep the cat from climbing over. I already sprinkled Havahart's pepper stuff. I just don't want to scare the gals. I also was thinking of mixing a cayenne pepper spray and spraying it on the top of the fence. I posted this question on the pest/predators forum but got no replies. What do you think?
I will write more later - I'm in the middle of another stretch of work. I also have to take the girls to the orthodontist today & Olivia has soccer practice tonight.

Sparks, Not real sure on the smelling ability of chickens. Something to look into. I know they have to have great eyesight. My roosters can see me in the dark at 4:30 every morning. They start crowing at me to pay attention to them.
Holly interesting stuff on the caponizing. I wish you where in Reno. I have heard the best way to learn is to assist someone that knows how to do it. I've castrated a lot of other farm animals in the past. never a bird. I worked for a short while in a vet clinic when I was 18. I got to assist with spaying cats quite a bit. it was sort of a production line thing. If we had 6 cats it was my job to make sure 6 sterile surgical kits where ready. they would move each cat to a recovery cage while I sterilized the table and set out a new kit. by the time I was done they had the next cat prepped and ready to go. It all moved really fast and the vet made it all look easy.
Sunny, it was nice to see you, and you are a brave soul to show up at my little storm of a home. Believe it or not it is always that crazy around here. you just sort of have to jump in and try to keep up.
Horsefeatherz, Sunny got your nipples and paid me for them so you are all good. The only thing left is for SparksNV and I to catch up with each other. With everything such a roller coaster right now that is starting to be a little rough. We will get it sooner or later though.
I got a call this morning at 4"30 that my dad had a heart attack last night. I talked to him for over an hour yesterday. So it was sort of one of those real jolt type bits of news. I am waiting to be able to go see him at the hospital right now.
Take care all, and I am placing a standing order that nobody else can get sick for at least 30 days. I am starting to think I should just rent a room at the hospital.

Oh, Penturner...no. I am so sorry to learn about your dad. Is he slated for surgery? I'm sending healing vibes and lots of recovery wishes in your direction. Stiff upper!

Buzzards rely heavily on their sense of smell to survive, so I would think chickens -- opportunistic scavengers that they are -- probably have the ability to smell, too. But I don't know how well they use it in their day-to-day activities, i.e., "Wait! I smell a coyote!" I think they rely more on sight and verbal warnings.
It would be interesting for somebody to conduct a shell game type experiment with a smelly bit of treat under boxes to see if chickens can ferret out a treat by scent alone.

Wish I wasn't but....My husband and I have a great son, 7y old and the rest of the family consists of 2 dogs Meg (10m old golden) Fox (15wk old corgi), 2 cats, lots of fish, one horse, 2 ducks Izzy (Pikin) Ming Ming (runner/pikin), 18 chickens (6 Americana, 2 R, Reds, 3 buffs, 3 silver laced Wyandotte, 2 crested polish, 1 bard rock, 1 silver phoenix) What I want: some Araucana (blue) and Marans.
