Nevadans?

The oldest one was 10 weeks, and had started to crow, but hasn't since. Not sure if once they get into the habit it will stop. But it would CERTAINLY be easier than trying to de-crow them, given the anatomy of their laryinx. It would be worth it for a few people I know who call me asking what they can do to stop their roosters from crowing (not to mention fighting with each other).

Yay, Holly! Glad to see that you made it here. I got 6 chicks out of a hatch and 5 of them are boys. One BCM, 2 BCMXCM cross, 1 WelsummerXEE cross, and one BlCMXBO/Black Frizzle Cochin Banty. I have heard all but one try crowing just this past week. Grrr.

I guess the next hatch tried to even the score cuz I got 8 girls out of 8 chicks. Actually, I purchased 4 pullet chicks (EEs) and the others were chicks hatched by ke_ben (3 Delaware and one Olive Egger). I thought I had 1 girl and 2 boy Dels, but at 12 weeks...no comb action! Not sure I want all three but we'll see. The one I'm really stoked about is the Olive Egger (BCMXEE). My first try died, second try is a boy (see above), so...keep your fingers crossed and knock on wood...perhaps 3 times really is the charm!

SparksNV & Peep_Show - You two are killin' me! So funny!

This is what I need to know from you - type yes at the end of the sentence below and send this back to me in a reply email. It's not necessary to reply if you are not coming.

1. Are you coming with chickens or eggs or feed or ? ? ? to sell, trade or give away?
2. Do you have a Beautiful Chicken to enter into the 'Hen' Beauty Contest?
3. Do you have a Rooster to enter into the 'Rooster' Beauty Contest?
4. Are you coming with fresh veggies from you garden to sell, trade or give away?
5. Are you coming just to mingle, learn or buy something? You don't have to be specific.
6. Can you print an 8X10 color flyer, that I send you by email, and then take it to a business for them to display?
7. Do you want to speak for 10 - 15 minutes (with a microphone) on a chicken topic - or do you want to give a demonstration?
8. Do you want space to promote your community service or non-profit organization - community garden - bird sanctuary - etc?
9. I need to call you if you need display space or want to speak at the microphone. What is your Name and Phone Number?

I need YES replies in about a week or sooner, Please. My shade canopies will go to those that respond (with chickens) first. Then I'll try to accommodate everyone the best that I can with what is available. It's a first come, first choice thingy.

Thanks - see you in the emails - I'll be in touch with site details if you are participating with something. I'll send you all a newsletter soon; the next time I come up for air.

Peep_Show you crack me up! Your story was sad and funny at the same time! I haven't even tried my hand at dressing a bird for dinner yet (other than removing the feathers, that was always my job as a kid) so I doubt I'll be attempting surgery any time soon. I'll leave that to you medical folks.

I have been studying up on vent sexing though. Turns out it is not quite as secret as I thought. An article has been published about it and I am determined to start practicing next spring on my new babies.

Holly31 welcome to the Nevada thread! When I get good at vent sexing chicks (apparently any dedicated home flock raiser can reach a seventy percent success rate with a little practice) do you want the extra roos for capons or do you concentrate on the light feathered breeds only since they look prettier dressed?

Just today Leslie Doyle sent out an e-mail cancelling this event because people didn't respond soon enough.... The below-listed e-mail went out last Tuesday.

I am impressed.... And you must have REALLY good eyes! In order for me to do this I would probably need 10.0+ readers....or like those microscope Coke-bottle specs. I am at that age and stage of vision where reading a menu becomes an arm-stretch exercise. Therefore, my chick sexing ability has to be really easy (sex-link) and nearly Dr. Seuss-ish: Red chick, yellow chick, girl chick, fellow chick.

Yes, I just got the email from Leslie cancelling because there wasn't enough interest in presenting, even though there was interest in customers coming to the fair. I was just asking her to give it another day or two because I just posted this for her - she is no on the board, I sent her the thread in hopes she will join.

Genny, do you have any roosters that are less agressive around others? Im going to get mythkats' welsummer guy, but to keep fertility up with 40 girls, I'd like two. We're going to be hatching chicks for replacement layers and food next year, its going to be great!!! And with the welsummer, there will be a 50% chance the maran crosses will lay dark eggs. lol ive got this all planned out.

Hey Holly31, its always nice to see new people!

Mythkat, i need my mom to call you, my poor cell phone is turned off. Hopefully it will be turned on by school
