That's what my DH says raising teenagers is like!

No offense Lacey! You sound much more together than most teens I'm used to.

They'll go back in on their own at dusk but if you wanted them in before that... well my DH sometimes gets a bug in his ear about getting them all in the run early, if we are heading out for the evening, and it is quite a sight watching him try to herd those chickens!

Ok, I shouldn't laugh but,

it's just too funny! He says it's easier than herding cats. No, I don't know what he means by that.

SparksNV - do not give them any treats before you let them out to run around. When you want them back, take your treats or scratch with you to the run - make sure the girls see and follow (not hard when they swarm

just remember to walk slow - chicken steps - so you don't step on someone or twist your ankle) and then spread treats in run, step out and close the door. This works very well - but do not forget to step out and close the door - don't do what I do, stand and watch them cause someone will decide that they need to leave the run before you.

Shhhh. Don't tell DH this. It's too fun to watch them running around the yard! Especially when he gets almost all of them in and then goes after a straggler, but doesn't close their gate...

Genny, loved your story about the super sweet roo! How cute is that?!!

Ya'll are too funny

Do I just leave the door to the run open or do I shoo them out of the run? I do have one very tall tree and a pond - should I be worried about that? I plan on being in the backyard while they range, probably reading a book. How long should I leave them out for?

TIA

Lol thats awesome about the chicken herding. My dad used to do it like that, then he bought this huge fish net with a fifteen foot long extending pole and uses that. It's pretty neat. He's super smart like that.
Good news everyone, while the cable was ff we did a lot of family things in the time my dad had off from work and the tv, and he told us all he knew that we're frusterated with him, but he'll try to let us be teenagers. He explained to us that he saw us as little kids still, but i guess more so than normal people, but he's really letting us do the things we really wanted, and he's cool with it. Im so happy. Rachelle got the kitten she always wanted, bre is going to friends houses, and I can get a roo or two.

And onto that note, Do you think I should get one or two? I have about 40 pullets, so what do you think? I'd like one of Genny's boys. How many roo's do you all have? On the other side i have two marans, and mythcat's welsummer should make dark brown laying chicks, right? Bleh, i dont know genetics.

Yes welsummers and marans are both dark egg layers. If you want more dark egg layers you will need a marans, a welsummer or a barnevelder roo and a separate pen for him and his girls. 1 roo for 20 hens is not enough from what I've read but I can't have more than 1 roo so he'll just be a tuckered out boy I guess.

That or I will have to give him a separate coop and run with fewer girls (which I will definitely do about 3 weeks before I go to hatch eggs).

SparksNV - I have been thinking about what you have said - trying to get them to eat more pellets - it might be the pellets are the reason they are not eating. My chickens/ducks do not care for the Farmers brand of pellets (geese will eat it), so the pellet might be the reason. If you purchase a bag of Flock Raiser - the pellets should be in at Greens by now - if not the crumbles will work, and the girls start gobbling them up - then you know. If that does happen, let me know and I will buy the bag of Farmers from you - if Greens will not take it back - just let them know (Cyndi if she is there or Beckie) that you got your chicks from me and they will not eat the Farmers and you want to exchange. They may do it. I am not sure what it is about that feed - I did feed it when I first moved here, to my ducks and I had a hard time getting them to eat it. Just before I started with chickens here, I found the Flock Raiser. Once I tried Farmers with the whole gang when the Flock Raiser was out of stock - only the geese would eat it without complaints.

You could just leave the run door open - it will not take long and they will start begging at the door when they are locked in and see you. With an open door, once the girls start laying, they can come and go from the coop.

Lacy - yup, you can have more than one roo in your flock - as long as you do not mind not know exactly what the chick might be (until older).

The Nipples are here. Final cost was $1.33 per nipple.

Please PM me I will also pm you my phone number to figure out how these can get to you. Sunny I can run yours up to you with 10 min notice. just let me know when is good for you.

I also got 10 extras at least so if anyone gets an itch to try them later just let me know.

By the way these are threaded. If anyone needs help putting threads in a bucket or pipe let me know. they also seal real well with 100% pure silicone caulk. just make sure it is 100% silicone.

Cool, i dont mind having random mixed chicks. My biggest concern is theyll fight. Ive never had more than one large roo, but i still have a couple male banties together i need to get rid of that are doing well.

HorsefeathersNV - Genny - thanks again for answering all of my questions! The gals scarfed down the wet feed. I will continue to do this at least 2 times per day. I did give them a couple of handfuls of scratch after they finished the feed.

Could you give me your recipe for your homemade scratch? Thanks!

Gotta get better at photographing the gals !
