Nevadans?

Rain is a Good Thing!!! lol love that song. it rained all Monday here. little sprinkle tuesday but really not anything, but it stayed cloudy all day. we are going hunting Thurs-Mon so if it rains, it will hopefully snow up where we are hunting. its around 1000 feet higher in elevation than where i live.

sparks were in this together! all my girls are over 20 weeks now, three of them are squatting and two are practicing egg songs. i wonder if the rain put them back at all?

I think it did in my case, I was getting a consistent 8 eggs a day and the last two days I have only gotten 6 eggs. But the good news is the SLW's are squatting and cooing all over the place so hopefully they will kick in with some eggs soon.

I have a question about selling eggs for those of you who do it. I want to put up some ads on CL's and E-bay local because I am getting a little over run with eggs but my DH is worried that if someone gets sick for whatever reason they might try to blame the eggs and then try to sue us or something. Is there a permit or something you have to have to sell eggs? Do you have your customer's sign a waiver or anything? I would really like to supplement my feed bill with selling some eggs this winter but I'd like to know how you all go about it.

Thanks!

Hey everyone, its been a busy week here. Lots of baking and canning for me. I am truly loving this great fall weather that we are having !

Sad note, my eggs that should have hatched died on me the other day. I am going to post in hatching and incubating with the photos of the eggtopsy.

I have a bator that I borrowed from Daegorn and I have a bunch of eggs that I put in that hopefully will all hatch out, they are coming along nicely so hopefully these will hatch out. I have to leave out of town to NY for 2 weeks so if these don't work out I think I may just have to take a break from it for awhile.

My baby chicks are doing great, the doxies love to lick them ( cleaning yuck ) and hopefully with lots of one on one time I can get them to not want to chase them when they are older.

I think that I want to get some fancy chickens in the spring too can anyone recommend a good place to look ?

Wow Ron! That is one full freezer!!! I think we are due for a Nevada thread BBQ soon!

Genny, I'm afraid to say that the move did not seem to be a good thing. The BCM pullets abandoned their's right away (they were very upset by the move) and then when I let them out in the morning their eggs were ice cold! I did not know they had abandoned them 'til it was too late. So when I let them out in the morning I put their eggs under the RIR that has been broody for MONTHS now and she tucked them under her so I assumed they would be fine.
Later I saw her out in the yard and didn't think much of it cause she leaves the nest once or twice a day anyway to freerange but always comes back before long. When I saw her out there a couple of hours later I panicked and went out to check the eggs. They were ALL ice cold now! I moved them back into the coop and she was in the main coop area by the time I got them all back into the regular nest and she hopped right up on them but was off again this morning and one had exploded over all the others!
Now I assume with the others being infected that this is a huge disaster at this point (not that I had much hope of them hatching after being so frigid cold yesterday).

The cold weather sure has been bad timing for these babies. I hear it's going to be back up to 77 degrees by this sunday.

I think I'll give up until spring. I'm much more comfortable with spring babies anyway.
Genny, I take it you usually wait to move them til they've all hatched? Or are your's just smarter than mine?

Aubrey, I miss the heat! My friend from East Texas laughs at what we consider rain here in NV but even she posted on FB that she was tired of the rain. She said "It has been raining real rain for 3 days here now! Not just sprinkles like what Nevadans usually call rain!"

Daegorn, don't you Southern Nevadans get some of the summer monsoon weather that Arizona and surrounding areas get? I thought you would have, being so close...

Hi Kim (Wolftracks)! OK this is your 2nd post so I've added you to the first page! You are an official member of the Nevada thread now!

Congrats on the new babies! I'm so happy to hear that somebody's babies are hatching safely! We aren't having great luck in the Silver State this week.

So glad you all had such a great weekend here. Next time you come up you can stay here, I have lots of room. You are welcome if you can stand the non-smoking rooms in this joint!

Carol, I'm glad Genny and I aren't the only ones that are missing the warm weather. I'm sure if Daniel were here he'd be posting the same thing. I am a desert rat through and through. I was born in the low desert though and these cold winters here in the high desert are something I'm still not quite used to. I can handle a few inches of warm rain though! In Arizona we could smell the rain coming hours before it got there!

Those are some of my favorite memories as a kid. *sigh*

Shanyalv, I'm so sorry to hear that your chicks didn't make it either.

I hope we both have better luck next time. Sounds like you are getting some great goodies done though! What are you baking and canning? I love to bake but I've never done any canning.

Don't I wish! Mnt. Charleston mess with us big time! Las Vegas gets more then we do, but the Mnt. get most every thing.
I'm from the NE and I want to live in the NW on the cost!

Sunny - I am canning apples, applesauce, apple butter, peaches and this next week will be the last of my tomato canning. This summer I did 80 lbs of apricots.
Baking- cinnamon rolls, buttermilk bread, museli bread and I made a killer Scandinavian Apple Cake ( similar to what you would get at Ikea tall stacks of apples and strudel )

When December rolls around it's rum balls and creme brulee.
