Nevadans?

hey guys i was looking for some advice, especially from sunny because i know your house is very close to other houses like mine is.

exactly how loud are your roos? When i found out my silkie was a roo (gosh i wish i woulda kept him

) i had him for a week before i gave him up. he would only crow inside the coop in the morning, and i was so worried my neighbors would be mad at me so i got rid of him. come to find after the fact that none of the neighbors had heard him at all and i coulda kept him afterall

well theres an ad on CL for a one-eyed rooster and mark and i were thinking about it....
i just need to know...what do your neighbors say? *for those who are in residential neighborhoods*
i know my guys wasnt that loud but then again he was only five months old...
descisions decisions.

also, is anyone trying to thin out their roos? im kind of interested in doing a roo test run (oh god i know that sounds sooo much worse than i mean for it to...)

Doesn't sound bad to me. My roos are kinda loud and I'm half expecting to get some complaints any day now but since I okayed it with my neighbors ahead of time they have been very tolerant. I'm probably just paranoid. It's not very loud when they are still locked in the coop. It's just when I let them out to forage in the morning that they seem loud (to me). IDK, Genny are they loud? You heard them the other day.
I do let them out later on the weekends though. So everyone can sleep in a little.

I would try it if I were you! Even if they complain at least you may get some fertile eggs before they do and then you can hatch your own silkies!
Oh, and yes I will have an extra roo in a few weeks. I am picking up 2 roos today and I really only wanted 1 but I didn't want this little BCM roo to be lonely while he's in quarantine so I am taking both roos from this gal on BYC. I think the other roo is an EE. I'll ask her when I pick them up later today.

I am not sure I am the person to ask – the roosters crowing does not bother me – dogs barking will and does drive me batty!

We pulled up into Sunny’s drive and I heard the boys – do not know if you neighbors can hear them inside their homes?

I also have some cockerels – various ages, and even a little Mille/Silver laced Cochin bantam cockerel – let me know if you want pictures.

Oh yes –

Jeeper1540 Are you looking for eggs for your lovely broody girl? Are you picky on breed?

I have no idea how to hatch, Ive never done it before. Maybe we could try it next spring but this year i just plan to order off MyPetChicken. Thanks for the offer though! Just wondering, What kinda eggs do you have?

Right now my main flock is mixed - mostly Heritage Orpington based with some hatchery girls (Del, EE, Cochin, buff Orp) in the mix. So what hatches is larger than hatchery but not as large as heritage.

Hatching is easy peasy - and with a broody - your work is almost all done for you. With shipped eggs, let them "rest" on the counter with the air cells up for 24 hours. Then place under broody, keep food/water near her. 21 days, listen closely and usually little peeping noises will be coming from under her.

Mom will teach the babies to eat, she will warm them when they need it, and she will teach them to interact with the flock.

Here is a picture of Heritage vs. Hatchery birds - the bird on the left is Buffy my privett Hatchery Orpington. The bird on the right is a Heritage splash Orpington - Garnet. Buffy is 7 months older than Garnet.

The one neighbor has said she can't hear them from her room and even when up and around they can only hear them faintly. The other has made comments that her dogs are barking more because the chickens in general are causing them to bark which is a load of bologna, cause they barked non-stop way before I got chickens and they bark at any movement. I feel like we have as much a right to use our own backyard as she does and I've never complained about her dogs (though our other neighbors have repeatedly).
She won't turn me in though because we are the only neighbors that border her that has never called to complain about her dogs (they really are super annoying because she leaves them out all night and they bark all night as well).

Yep! Broody hens make this a no-brainer, at least if we leave them alone.
