Well we have set a date. We found a vet to come out here this coming saturday to put Jabber (my dog) to sleep here at home. It's sad but i think its time, he just keeps getting worse...
Spend that extra cuddle time this week and take some pictures. We have two that we keep thinking about having put down, one is going to be 15 in a couple months (he is blind, deaf, loosing his smell), the other 10 with a failing hindend.
I have had to say good by to several, the last one I did a foot print of him before we said good by. I got the idea from a friend. We just painted his foot and stamped it on some paper. When I can I'm going to frame it with some pics of him. We have had the horses vet out for all of our good byes. We much prefer it to taking them in to the vets. I am sorry for your loss, just know that you are making the right decision.
When I say good-bye to my faithful friends, I make a donation to an animal rescue group or animal shelter in the pet's name. Short of replacing the empty space in the house, giving another worthy animal a shot at a good life is a truly befitting memorial.
Jeeps, I know you feel bad about the upcoming events. I am so sorry as it is not one of the more pleasant aspects of pet ownership. Remember, though, that your dog had a home, regular food, a family and a good healthy and active life....which is all any dog could ever want. That is akin to heaven on earth for canines. No doubt that now that he cannot enjoy these things and the pain is detracting from his quality of life, the kindest thing you could do is to make sure he doesn't suffer. Love isn't all joy and barking; Sometimes the flipside of love is feeling heaviness in your heart. Hard as it is, try not to be sad that your dog is gone, but be happy for all the joy Jabber brought to your life. That is the payback humans can do for good dogs everywhere.
p.s.
Feel free to howl at the moon. Dogs got it right on that one.

We just went through this a few short weeks ago. We waited too long though. Youngest son wanted us to wait until he came home the day after christmas so we waited and it was horrible! She was in so much pain and on christmas eve we found her on the cold floor where she had rolled off her bed and couldn't move to get back on it. We finally took her in. I will never put it off again it was too hard on her! Youngest son understood once he realized how bad it was for her.
